“What do you suppose they’re talking about?” Derek spied on Gabe and Kyle from the other isolation cabin. The Farm had them strategically placed opposite the other, close enough to see but not close enough to hear. Smart. It kept the occupants apart yet forced them to behave, knowing they were being watched.
Jacob hadn’t stopped pacing since Derek joined him on the porch. “I don’t know. Whatever it is, I don’t like it.”
He leaned against one of the wood posts holding up the porch cover and grabbed a dried twig that had fallen onto the railing to give his hands something to do. “How do you know you don’t like it? Gabe could be talking you up for all you know.”
“Hardly. It’s obvious what he’s doing.”
“What’s that?”
“He’s driving a wedge between me and Kyle.” He thrust his hands into his hair, something he did whenever his frustration got the better of him. “I should go over there and knock his ass out.”
Derek chuckled and shook his head. Jacob talked a big talk, but when it came down to it, he’d just as soon knock out any person who posed a threat to anyone at the Farm. He protected his family—that included Gabe right now whether the hothead wanted to admit it or not.
“Something funny?” Jacob snarled, earning an eye roll. He waved Derek off and went back to pacing. “I don’t see why you’re not more upset about this.”
“About what? Kyle threw a tantrum. Gabe calmed him down. End of story.”
“I don’t trust him. He’s up to something. Did you know he cracks perps for TREX?”
“Makes sense, considering he’s got a gift for reading minds.”
“He manipulates people for a living, Derek.”
He tossed pieces of twig off the porch as he continued to spy on the other cabin, chewing on what Jacob just said. Gabe definitely had the power of manipulation in his vast arsenal of mental tricks. Still, the way he struggled to recall pieces of his past couldn’t be an act. Could it? No one was that good. “You think he’s faking it?”
“I think he’s here for more than recovery. I think he’s a plant.”
Derek pushed away from the post as his chest tightened. If Jacob only knew who the real plant was, he’d follow through with his threat to beat someone unconscious. “You think the agency is spying on us?”
Jacob stopped pacing as he met his gaze, eventually nodding. “Yeah, I do. Think about it. Kyle transformed from a kid struggling to put together a whole sentence into a deadly weapon with impossibly accurate aim. He won’t talk to anyone about that day except his imaginary friend, saying Kyra is the only one who understands. When I bring it up, he shuts down. Since he won’t talk about it to anyone real, why not bring in someone who can get it out of him without talking? It makes the most sense.”
“Yeah, maybe.” He didn’t want to admit to how much sense Jacob’s theory really did make. It sure as hell held more weight than the story McKoy kept feeding him.
