CHAPTER 11

“Professor!” shouted Ben from the air. “We have detected activity approaching the shuttles at a rapid pace. They are moving quickly and closing in.”

“STAR, on screen now,” said the Professor, sitting back down before the screens at headquarters. He looked closely over the data and the satellite imagery, using every technology he had at his disposal.

“Professor, the approaching objects are military grade drones,” said STAR.

“That bastard!” said the Professor as he smashed his fist on the terminal “This whole time he was toying with us, keeping us distracted from the real objective, which was to slaughter these innocent civilians.”

His Resistance fighters on the ground were still engaged in battle. There was no way they could make it to the shuttles in time.

“Professor, we can move to engage the drones via the Elitewing,” said Ben.

“NO, stay back,” replied the Professor sharply.

These drones that were pursuing the shuttles were the same drones that the Torch had used before, and they were heavily armed. They would pose an immediate threat to the Elitewing, which was not designed for combat.

“But Professor, the people—” started Ben.

“There’s nothing we can do.” The Professor shook his head. Cecilia was quiet beside him. “Don’t you understand? They’ve got us—they’ve got us just as they had planned it this whole time. Those people were doomed as soon as they boarded those shuttles.”

“No Professor, there has to be something we can do! Anything!” said Ben.

Inside the aircraft, RADAR looked at the screen and connected to the terminal.

“I will stop them,” he said.

Ben looked at him and then his eyes lit up in understanding.

“Of course! If they are drones, that means you can hack into their communication systems and control them,” said Ben.

The Professor adjusted his glasses and looked at the screen. “Yes, that’s worth a try,” he said. “Give it your best, RADAR, the lives of all those people are resting on your abilities.”

RADAR connected to the satellite and began to move within the network. He calculated every possible entry into the communication system that was being used by the Torch. He was collecting huge amounts of data within nanoseconds.

“There,” he said.

He displayed a diagram on the screen, which showed the type of drones flying towards the shuttles. Having understood their components, RADAR looked over to Ben, who was still trying to make sense of the situation.

“The drones that are in pursuit are not being controlled remotely,” RADAR said.

“What?” said Ben.

“They are made specifically to detect heat signatures and detonate upon contact.”

“NO! How can that be?” cried Ben. “How can it be that they have us at every turn?”

“There is one last solution we can proceed with,” said RADAR.

“What is it?” said the Professor.

“I have hacked a remote military silo that has missile capabilities. I can deploy countermeasures and attempt to engage the targets before their detonation,” the droid said. “But I need to act now. Our window of opportunity is closing.”

Ben waited for a response from the Professor.

The Professor had his lips pressed together tightly. He knew this was highly risky because of the proximity of the shuttles to the explosion.
