GIVE IT TIME

The long timescale that’s sometimes involved in getting problems to work out and ideas to cohere is something I’ve long had to resign myself to. The title story in this collection, “Frost on Glass,” to take an extreme example, is based on an idea of writers on a dystopian commune island which I can well remember trying out a first scene for in my bedroom in my parents’ old house when I was about 19. I came back to it again, oh, fifteen years ago, and for a while I seemed to be on to something, and then again I was stalled. Then, about ten years back, I looked at what I’d written five years earlier, and reckoned there really was something there. But I still couldn’t get it to work. Until, finally, when I returned to it again as I was thinking about a “new” story for this collection, I managed to wrestle the thing to the ground in ways I’ll say more about in the story’s afterword. Other stories, thank God, do come to me quicker and more easily. Both “Letter to Will” and “A Concise and Ready Guide,” to take two examples in this book, were essentially both done over a few days, and were based on ideas which had only recently occurred to me, and stood up pretty well at first draft.
