The Old Ursuline Convent, which dates from 1752, is the oldest building in the Mississippi River valley.

The Old U.S. Mint ★★ The exterior of the Old U.S. Mint (the only building in America to have served as both a U.S. and a Confederate mint) got hammered by Katrina, but that gave them the opportunity to audit their collection, design new exhibits, and renovate pretty much everything. It has since reopened to display worthwhile exhibits showcasing Louisiana-related art and artifacts. Numismatists will also find much to see here (like O-minted coins, struck right here). Fun fact: Ghost hunters believe William Mumford, who met the noose here in 1862, still hangs around. The big news is that the entire building will house a serious, comprehensive jazz history museum and nightclub, projected for 2013. Very cool. Swingin’, in fact.
