★★★ Bondir CAMBRIDGE NEW AMERICAN Settling in for a dining experience at chef Jason Bond’s luxuriously inventive restaurant is like visiting the dining room of a friend who happens to be an artisan gourmand: There are barely a dozen tables, rock music sets a casual mood, and a single $68 five-course menu (no à la carte options) means that you give yourself over to whatever the chef has planned for that evening. Menu descriptions might include “Mangalitsa Pork Shoulder, Parsley Root, Hedgehog Mushrooms, Walnuts” or “Seared Mackerel with Foie Gras, Squash, Crosnes, Perigord Truffle Vinaigrette.” 279A Broadway. ☎ 617/661-0009. www.bondircambridge.com. 5-course dinner $68. ★★ Brasserie JO BACK BAY FRENCH A classic brasserie—with long hours (6:30am–midnight weekdays, 7am–midnight weekends) and a wide-ranging menu. Tarte flambée (or flammekueche), the Alsatian-style pizza, is a specialty here, and served both in its classic form (with onion, bacon, and fromage blanc, or crème fraiche) and with a few nifty combinations including salmon, capers, and egg.120 Huntington Ave., in the Colonnade Hotel. ☎ 617/424-7000. www.colonnadehotel.com/brasserie-jo. Standouts include its egg and eggplant sandwich, French fries with rosemary, and mezze platter of vegetables. Most locations include an appealing selection of iced teas and local beers. 1326 Mass. The five- and seven-course tasting menus ($85 and $108) provide a chance to sit back and try plate after innovate plate of seasonal fare. Chef Tony Maws also hosts inventive special events, including chef’s whim Sundays, burger and beer lunches with Somerville brewery Aeronaut, and a comfy Passover meal with matzoh ball soup and asparagus with chicken liver sauce. 853 Main St. ☎ 617/497-5511. www.craigieonmain.com.
