After walking past several pieces of artwork, Parker dropped his hand from Claire’s elbow and spun her around.

“I want you staying away from Philip.”

“But he’s my landlord. We live on the same property.”

“You can always move.” Parker jutted his chin out. “You’re a talented and beautiful young woman who needs to be protected from the advances of inferior men.”

“Inferior? Philip isn’t inferior. Everyone speaks well of him.”

“Hey, I’ve known Philip a lot longer than you have and know things about him you don’t.”

“Parker, I have no intention of moving out of that cottage anytime soon.”

“We’ll see about that.”

“But, Philip and I—we’re—we’re—friends.” She swallowed hard and rubbed her upper arms so that her hands wouldn’t shake. “That’s all…” she whispered as the disappointing truth of her words sank in. “Just friends.” She heaved a sigh. “Besides, for being so inferior, Philip is apparently good enough for your sister.”

“Bah! There is no comparison between Vanessa and you. She’s going to do what she wants to do, and I can’t control her foolish actions.”

A dark memory buried deep within her lifted its head and roared a warning. Refusing to acknowledge its presence, she forced it back and shushed it with her trustful reasoning. No, Parker is different.

Distracted by a curvy young woman standing in front of one of Vanessa’s paintings, Parker quickly changed the subject. “The gallery will close soon. Go on ahead and finish looking at the artwork without me but make sure I see you again before you leave.”

“I will.”

Parker walked over to the woman and started a conversation.

Claire ran her fingers up and down her arms once more to calm her trembling. She had one last wall of artwork to look at before heading downstairs to purchase her selections.
