RIGHT up until the moment the cool of her bed linen kissed her naked back, Tori might have chickened out. But the moment she’d felt the touch of the safest place in the world within the safest part of her world in the arms of the safest man in her world, she knew this was one hundred-percent right. It wasn’t forever—they both knew that—but it had been coming since the first moment she saw him.

Nathan’s lips hadn’t left hers since the two of them crashed through her new door, twisted up in each other’s arms, stumbling in their rush to get each other naked. To know each other. To love each other.

Just for one night.

Now, his skin still radiated a blazing heat, lying half-sprawled on top of her, one sweaty leg thrown over her two, simmering blue holding her enraptured while her strained chest rose and fell heavily from the gymnastics of the past hour.

Of all the things she had secretly hoped to discover about making love for the first time—all the things she did discover—finding out she almost wasn’t fit enough was not on her expected list.

“My chest is about to explode,” she gasped. “You’d think being climbing-fit would have helped. How do normal people cope?”

Nathan chuckled close to her ear as his fingers traced lazily over the ridges of her brow, her nose, her lips. She bit gently at the fingers and heard the controlled heaving of his own lungs between his words. “I’m not sure most ‘normal’ people would have put quite that much effort into it.”

Tori’s flushed skin couldn’t accommodate any more blood, so her blush had no purpose. “Really? Was I too …?”

Vigorous? Enthusiastic? Trying too hard?

Nathan’s lips split wide in a dirty grin. “You were amazing.” Then the smile sobered just slightly and he dragged his thumb over her bottom lip. “You are amazing.”

Oh …

Moments like that made it hard to forget this was a one-off.

Moments like the one when he’d turned her blazing gaze to his and held it. When he’d gently stroked away the sneak of moisture that had escaped her eye after it all got too overwhelming. When he’d pulled her into his shoulder and murmured words of reassurance as she’d fragmented into a million shards of the sweetest diamond dust.

He hadn’t made love to her like a man who didn’t care.

And she hadn’t responded like a woman who didn’t want to be cared for.

Whoops on both their parts.

Not that there was any question about whether she cared. She wouldn’t have risked—trusted—just anyone. Only Nathan. Arrogant, brave, wounded Nathan. But would she ever lie in her big bed again and not think of the wasted size of it? Would she ever touch her lips and not taste him there? Would she ever be the same? There were some consequences that a condom couldn’t prevent.

The emotional ones.

Maybe she shouldn’t have given in to her baser instincts and ripped open Pandora’s box knowing she would never let herself keep what she found inside.
