Freya woke up to laughter coming from the kitchen window in the cottage. She had slept very well. It was late morning as she clambered out of bed. There was warm water and a large bowl left by the tent doorway. She washed and changed her clothes, feeling light-hearted.
âLando, your bread is exquisite. Is that your homemade jam?â Simon appeared to be in heaven with the wonderful breakfast. Freya stood at the doorway watching her friends chat and eat. The smell of fresh bread and bacon frying was making her mouth water.
âAh! A young lady at the door. Come in, come in!â Orlando pulled out a chair in a theatrical gesture. He bowed and whipped a napkin off the table to place on her lap. She grinned and saw Simon wink at her across the table.
âTry this bread, Freya. It is warm and crusty. Just out of the oven. Here, try the butter. Never tasted anything so good in your life.â He wiped his chin as melted butter oozed down, leaving a greasy trail.
âIt all smells amazing. Where do you get the butter?â She took a huge bite of the bread. Wow! It was good!
âMy cows are the suppliers,â Orlando said proudly. âThey are fed on the best grassland in the area.â He poured Freya a hot drink that smelled like a spicy tea while she continued to eat. She heaped a spoonful of strawberry jam on top of the buttered bread.
âLord above, that smells good. I wish I could sample it.â Rowanâs voice floated above her head. She looked up and laughed.
âYour choice to stay here without a body. Do you want me to describe how it tastes?â She smiled.
âNo. Donât. I will only be miserable. I think I will go to another room for the time being.â The spark of light zoomed out the door to the stairs, then zipped up to the bedroom that Freya guessed must be Orlandoâs. Last night she hadnât noticed there was another floor to the cottage. At least Simon had a comfortable bedroom to himself on the ground floor.
They had a relaxed breakfast, chatting and laughing as though they had all known one another for a lifetime. It was decided that they would remain as Orlandoâs guests for as long as they required. They needed to have a base, and Freya had to be introduced to this new world. The village of Redford was similar to Freyaâs village at home: generations of families being brought up together, life-long friendships, marriages and babies, everyone knowing each other, working together and living a happy, contented life. So, where was the problem? Freya was confused. She could not see how this lovely area could be in trouble. It wasnât. The problem was in the large city a few miles from here. Turnell. They would not discuss it with Freya.
âPlenty time for that later. You need to experience the market and village first. We need to observe some of the activities in the city. It is still unclear what we are up against,â said Orlando.
