I was still grim and glum when the clock struck two. Marvellous M and the dogs had arrived. The house was bursting with dogs, puppies and people.

Mac, Fizz and their dad Cecil arrived first.

Fizz picked up Knickers. “This is the one I want.”

Cecil frowned. “You promise you’ll walk him? Scoop his poo off the lawn? Feed him? Flea him?”

“Promise.” Fizz’s left hand was tucked behind her back. She crossed her fingers, caught my eye and winked.

“I still don’t think this is a terribly good idea …” Cecil’s frown got frownier.

“Dad,” said Fizz, Formidable-Mildred-like. “You let Mac keep that chinchilla. This puppy’s coming home with us. And that’s that.”

That did seem to be that, too. Cecil sighed and said okay. Mac did a thumbs-up. I thumbsed-up back. Fizz sure is good at getting her way. Hip hip hooray!
