TWELVE

ONYX

My knuckles ache and my muscles burn as I continue to spar with Grave in the small boxing ring the club has downstairs. Usually, this place is used for exercise and when one of us needs to be taught a lesson, but right now, I’m swinging my fists at Grave like I’m going to be able to take all my frustrations out on him. I told Rayne that nothing she said would change the way I felt about her, but now that she’s told me in explicit detail everything that happened to her while she was with Dario, I feel like I lied.

Hearing all that shit only made me want her more. In fact, it made me feel like a fool for even thinking I was worthy of being with someone as brave and strong as she is. She doesn’t deserve this shit life that I have to offer her, but for some reason, she seems set on staying with me. She wants to be with me, and she refuses to let me believe that it’s my fault all this happened.

Truthfully, when she told me everything about how she was taken from her parents’ grave, it only solidified the fact that her sister had a more significant hand in this than any of us realized. It was almost as if Dario’s cronies were waiting on Rayne to go to the grave so they could take her. It’s not like any of them knew that she and I had an argument or that I’d told her to leave. No matter when Rayne went to the cemetery again, they would have been there to kidnap her. There was nothing I could have done about that.

I swing another right hook at Grave, but this time, he doesn’t duck fast enough. I connect hard on the side of his face, and he goes down fast. I pull back, ready for him to get up and come for me, but he doesn’t. This isn’t my enemy.

“Jesus fucking Christ, man. What the fuck did I do to you?” he asks while he’s still on his back, shaking his head, trying to clear the bells ringing.

I huff out a breath and look down at him on the mat. A red mark on the side of his face is the only mark I left from my hit. The sick need to see blood rushes through my veins and I fight the urge. I need to stop this before I wind up doing some real damage. Leaning down, I offer Grave my hand to help him up.

“That’s my bad, bro. My head isn’t on straight right now,” I offer as an excuse, but Grave continues to stare at me as if he’s not satisfied with that. I did just try to take his head off, so I do a little better. “Rayne let me in on everything that went on in that place. She told me all about Dario and the other shit that she didn’t want to go into when we first got her home.
