24 Bad Trip

Rick was still tasting Ginny’s tears when Dennis and Pete came in, switching on the main light and blinding him.

Dennis positively seethed with anger, coming straight up to the bed. ‘I was right about Evans and her, the pair of them were plotting something when I went downstairs.’

‘What do you mean?’

‘I found them huddled together in the dining room. Pretending to be doing her maths homework.’ He snorted derisively. ‘As if.’

‘It’s not completely outside the realms of possibility. Bryn dropped out of a physics degree to join up. He must have been pretty good to get onto that in the first place.’

Rick looked at Pete with new eyes, he didn’t realise they were so close. The Welshman didn’t open up to people easily; he must trust Pete to have told him that.

‘Whatever. They moved apart guiltily when I got there, and he was winding me up in front of her. He’s done a hell of a lot of that. Like he’s trying to show off for her benefit, putting me down all the time.’

‘Are you telling me Bryn’s the traitor?’ Rick’s sharp tone halted the rambling whinge. ‘That would make me innocent. Have you come to set me free?’ He fixed Pete with a steady gaze, and he displayed the same signs of discomfort Bill had earlier. Rick sensed an uneasy alliance under Dennis, but they were trained to obey the one giving the orders and Dennis outranked them all.

‘No, we’ve come to ask you ...’ but his purpose was lost as they heard her scream followed by shouting. Dennis and Pete bolted out, but he was frustrated by the cuffs.

She screamed at them to stop it. What the hell were the bastards doing to her? Rick yelled and started in earnest then, but no matter how he pulled and twisted, he couldn’t shift the strut. He merely succeeded in scratching it. The damage he was doing to his wrists finally began to penetrate and he yelled again. She appeared briefly saying, “I’m ok”, before disappearing.

The others trooped in and Dennis met his questioning gaze with a shrug. ‘We found him,’ pointing to Bryn, ‘bending over her and she was screaming at him.’

Pete frowned. ‘Be fair, Dennis. She said it was a nightmare.’

‘Perhaps he’d like to explain himself. Like what he was doing in her bedroom in the first place?’ Dennis was happy to milk this one for all it was worth.

Bryn met Rick’s gaze, neither wavering. ‘I came up to see what you had to say. I wanted to see it for myself. And to make sure you got a fair deal.’ He shot a meaningful glance at Dennis.

‘When I passed her door, I heard a yell, so I went in. She was obviously having some sort of bad trip, so I shook her to try and wake her out of it. She was crying and yelling at someone to get off. Next thing I know, these two are all over me and she’s screaming at them to stop.
