Fine Tuning

Besides the aforementioned problems, cosmologists have wondered about the many apparently accidental "coincidences" among the various constants of nature. For example, the fundamental force strengths and particle masses observed seem to be precisely determined for the existence of a universe like ours. Slight deviations from the values of these constants would lead to a radically different kind of universe with extremely inhospitable conditions for life forms like our own. These apparent coincidences are sometimes referred to as examples of fine tuning, which implies that tiny changes in some of the basic features of the universe would make the existence of life in it impossible. Fine tuning, however, does not presuppose the existence of a cosmic "Fine Tuner," though it could be interpreted in this way if so desired. This might appeal to theologians looking for evidence of cosmic design, but most scientists would prefer to invoke either pure chance or the anthropic principle.
