Chapter Seven

Eden

I stop in my tracks making my arm jerk when I make him stop too. “Your what?!” I screech and take a quick breath to steady myself. Ace gives me a lazy smile and I almost forgive him. Almost.

“Come on. They’re waiting.” Ace pulls me forward and I stumble into him.

“I’m going to kill you. I barely know you, I can’t meet your parents!” I hiss at him, dragging my feet and trying to think of how I look. I’m wearing decent jeans, pink shoes, and a pink sweater, but have on no makeup and my hair is in this messy ponytail thing. I am not meet the parents ready. And why would I be? I like Ace. I like Ace a lot. And I’d love to stay with him forever in Forever, but he’s leaving in two days, and I don’t have my life together enough to wait on him. I don’t even know where I’m going to live.

“Sure you can.” Ace turns and winks at me, and I drop his hand. He reaches for it, but I turn away and pull the tie from my hair, shake out my head, and comb out my mass of dark waves. Ace watches every second, emerald eyes wide.

“Is that better? I wish you’d told me about this, I don’t even have makeup on, and I look twelve,” I grumble.

Ace slides an arm around my waist and pulls me close, kissing my head. “You look gorgeous.” His other hand twirls a strand of my hair between his long fingers and his eyes bore into mine. Suddenly, meeting his parents doesn’t sound so bad. Not at all.

Until the door opens and I’m faced with the reality. A man who looks like Ace in thirty years stands in front of me complete with a flannel shirt, jeans, and matching boots. Gray streaks his reddish hair and beard, but he has the same smile and green eyes. “You must be Eden! Come in.” He grabs my hand and pulls me to him, wrapping arms around me in a hug. I awkwardly pat his back and pull away.

“Nice to meet you.” I force a smile and look up at him.

“I’m Charlie and my wife Marcia is in the kitchen. Lunch is almost ready. Drake already left for work, but I’m sure you’ll meet him soon enough if you plan on staying in Forever.” Charlie started down the hall, but I was rooted to the spot, staring at the cozy entry room. The house was exactly what you’d expect from a farmhouse in the fifties, down to the red and white gingham curtains.

“Oh, she’s staying.” Ace rested a hand on my lower back to urge me forward.

“How do you know?” I whisper. “And how does he know about me? I just met you yesterday!”

Ace answers me with a shrug and takes my hand to drag me to the kitchen. “Mom. This is Eden.” He offers me up to his mom like a prize he won. I kind of like it.
