Chapter Twenty-Three
The drawing room wasnât all that different from the sitting room. Yet another spot in the house that looked like it had been imported from Versailles.
This one done in cream and rose, everything was bordered with expensive, intricately carved wood and gold inlay. Chandelier overhead. A massive, ivory fireplace, its mantelpiece filled with bric-a-brac and a Chinese vase with rosebuds from the garden. In the middle of a sitting arrangement sat an oval coffee table with a pearl top that Miranda was afraid sheâd break if she touched.
She found Gen waiting for her in the corner, sitting in the curvy bergère chair that was upholstered in a ruby pattern. With her almost white blond hair, her severe black pantsuit, and her tense posture, she reminded Miranda of one of those white tigers in Las Vegas. Eyes alert, body ready to pounce, claws ready to tear her apart. Stunning in a photo, but close-up? Deadly.
How about the breezy approach? âHi, Gen,â Miranda sang out as she entered the room. âSo glad you could make it over.â Might as well make the best of it.
âIâm sure you are.â Wasting no time, she looked like she was about to snarl as she reached for the briefcase on the floor beside her. âAs Iâm sure you know, my father wants me to plan your wedding.â She said the word wedding like she was talking about the plague.
âYeah, I do.â Nothing like having a planner who loved her work. This should go well. She took a seat opposite the woman on the pink silk settee. No need to get too close.
Gen closed her eyes and huffed. âWhy on earth did you pick the first week in August?â
âWhatâs wrong with it?â
âItâs not enough time for a big wedding.â Through those clenched teeth, Gen sounded a little like Edward G. Robinson. Her shoulders rose in a stiff inhale, as if she were reminding herself to behave. âI donât suppose I can persuade you to move it forward?â
âNo.â
Her dark eyes narrowed, and Miranda thought she could feel the laser piercing her forehead. Sheâd have to remember to check later for holes.
Gen sighed and snapped her briefcase open. She took out a notepad and pen, closed the case again and set it on the floor. âOkay. Letâs get started. Weâll have to work fast. And I mean really fast.â
No screaming and shrieking in protest? No threats of firing? Parker had really done a number on his daughter this time. She wondered if Gen had talked to Estavez about the wedding. The two were close. But Gen wasnât about to offer a romantic toast like her surrogate brother had.
Miranda lifted her hands. âFine with me.â
âLetâs start with the location.â
Miranda frowned. âLocation?â
âWhere do you want the ceremony to be held?â
âOh. Hmm. Whatâs the biggest church in the area?â
âSaint Simonâs Episcopal.â
Sheâd been to St. Simonâs during her last case for a funeral. But she didnât think that would bother Parker. He hadnât attended it. Well, heâd followed her there, but heâd stayed outside.
