The junior partner of the firm, young Mr. Mikhail Yeltsin, checked his cell phone the moment it buzzed. The caller was Mr. Black, and he answered.

The junior Mr. Yeltsin was in his early forties but was always referred to as young to differentiate him from the elder Mr. Yeltsin, his father and senior partner of the firm. He raked a hand through prematurely greying hair before taking the call.

“Well? Are we done?”

“No, sir. “

He gripped the phone involuntarily. “Why not?” He listened for a minute and then said, “Look, Black, you have his name. You have his picture. You have his University and his address. Have men at each location and wait for him. He’ll have to show up sooner or later. And when he does, take care of him.”

He listened again and then said, “Not another cent if you don’t come through soon! I need this out of my life. Clean, the way we discussed. No messes left behind.”

He ended the call but swiveled his chair to face the view of New York from his 39th floor office window. If his father ever caught wind of the gaffe he’d made in letting someone overhear his compromising conversation, he’d be furious. He might even oust him from the firm. He was already on rocky ground with dear old dad for mishandling a multi-million account that cost them big. And it wasn’t the first time.

He couldn’t afford to let an insignificant graduate student implicate him in another mess, something more dire than financial bungling. Discovery could mean prison.

If it meant cornering the boy himself, he wasn’t about to let that happen.
