I was especially glad for the collar when Will got called to work in the New York office for three days the following week. Since he’d been given a promotion, he’d been called on to travel more and more. I was pretty sure I was the only one who knew how much he hated that. If nothing else, Will knew how to put on a good front.

But he was a homebody. He didn’t sleep so well when I wasn’t next to him, and he was often too hot or too cold in hotel rooms. The time difference didn’t help either. And I knew from personal experience that he got grouchy if he didn’t eat meals at regular times.

So I ached for him when he was away, knowing how much he was hurting and not being able to do anything about it.

He’d sent me a text early in the evening to say his flight was delayed, so I’d gone to bed not sure when he’d get home. That made for some restless sleep, and I woke up immediately when I heard his car pulling into the garage, then his feet on the stairs.

“Go back to sleep,” he murmured, kissing me on the head before going through to our master bathroom.

It only took a few minutes for him to come back to bed, and I stripped off my T-shirt and boxers so we could sleep together naked.

Will laughed softly, and a moment later I felt his bare skin next to my own.

Without saying anything, he anchored his arm around my waist and pressed his face to the back of my neck. I felt him taking deep breaths, like he did when he was trying to center himself. The past couple of months had been an emotional rollercoaster.

I silently lifted his hand to my lips and pressed a kiss to his palm, then another on his wedding ring.

He fell asleep still holding me, and when I woke the next morning, I was still wrapped up in his arms.

I turned off my alarm before it could go off and buried myself back under the covers.

“Don’t you need to go to work?” Will asked, a touch of humor in his tone as he played our fingers together. I wasn’t even aware that he was awake yet.

“Nope,” I said on a yawn. “Well, not until later. I worked a few hours extra last week so I’m not due in until twelve. What about you?”

“I’m working from home today,” he said. His voice was a little gravelly and I hoped he wasn’t getting sick. “In theory.”

I laughed and rolled over, pillowing my head on his chest so I could listen to the familiar thump-thump of his heartbeat.

We got up, eventually, showered together then went for breakfast in a little diner close to the house. I couldn’t help but just look at him. I was probably staring, probably looked like someone who had issues. I didn’t care. My husband was home.

“I’m going to need to get back,” I said as I signaled the waitress for our check.
