ALEXIS

It’s starting to get dark outside the windows by the time I sit back in my chair, rolling my head from side to side in a vain attempt to loosen the tension that’s built up over hours spent in front of my laptop. Captain Felch pulled a few strings and called in a few favors, and I’ve spent hours poring over every detail of the photos taken at what is left of Dad’s trailer. What am I looking for? I have no idea. I only know that, according to the captain’s friend at the fire department, they’re leaning toward calling it arson.

I can only think of one person in the entire world who would deliberately burn down my father’s trailer, and imagining Tyler coming so close to my family makes me sick to my stomach. This isn’t a case of jumping to conclusions – if anything, I’ve gone out of my way to avoid connecting Tyler to the fire in the days since it burned.

He’s my only viable suspect, though. That’s the problem. The questions I asked around the trailer park today confirmed what I already knew; everybody loves my dad. He is everybody’s best friend, helpful, dependable. They miss him over there. After giving them time to think things over, the neighbors still can’t recall seeing or hearing anything out of the ordinary in the early morning hours before the trailer went up in smoke. There’s a dead end squarely in front of me, a brick wall, and the frustration is crushing.

In other words, I need to take my mind off this for a little bit. I’m getting nowhere and frustrating myself worse with every passing hour.

Maybe I should go over and make sure Mom and Dad haven’t killed each other yet. Granted, there haven’t been any calls from either of them to tip me off to any problems, but still. They might want to avoid worrying me. The fact that they are both grown adults capable of handling their business occurs to me, but I still feel a strange sense of responsibility. No, I did not burn down my father’s home. No, there’s no way of knowing for sure who did – at least, not yet. Maybe soon, but not yet.

At the end of the day, it was my idea that he stay with Mom. I don’t want her resenting me for it if all they’ve managed to do is bicker.

Once I’ve got my coat on, I grab my bag and turn off the light in my office. Captain Felch’s office is dark, the blinds pulled over the windows. He finally went home for a little while at his wife’s insistence, though I’m sure Pete is never far from his mind no matter where he happens to be. There’s still not so much as a faint lead in the case. Deputies have interviewed just about everybody in the kid’s life, from his teachers to his few friends. Everybody tells the same story of a good kid who had never been any trouble to anyone.
