Stacey checked her watch. Again. “Are you sure you shouldn’t go up there? She’s been gone a long time.”

“Hells no. She’d kill me.”

The teacher quirked her eyebrow, and I hurried to explain. “The second I go near that room, the connection between her and Molly will be broken. Kate doesn’t like people hovering over her while she does her thing—she’ll be fine.”

But I’d started to have a bad feeling too. The last time someone went into that room alone, she’d disappeared. Until we figured out what had happened to Molly (and, okay, to Wes), no one would feel safe.

The front door flew open, making us jump. We turned to see Melanie enter, followed closely by Greta and Bracken.

“What’s going on?” Stacey asked. “Is he okay?”

Greta shook her head, her eyes filling with tears, and ran to her room. Bracken and Melanie, while clearly upset, were more subdued.

“Is that pálinka?” Bracken said, pulling up a chair. “Hit me, bro.”

I poured him a glass. “You want one too?” I asked Melanie.

“No, that’s all right.” She slumped at the table beside Bracken. “What a nightmare this has turned out to be. We were supposed to be writing scary stories, not living one.”

“Now you’re scaring me. What’s wrong with Wes?” Nicole asked.

Melanie ran her hands through her hair, looking weary and dejected. “They don’t know. It’s more than memory loss—they could at least tell us that. He’s practically catatonic, but they have no idea why. At first they suspected some traumatic brain injury, but there’s no sign of it. Now they think it might be a brain infection.”

“Jesus. How long are they going to keep him?” Steve asked.

“They didn’t say. I don’t think they know, honestly. They need to run a lot more tests. Tomorrow I’ll have to go back with Anna or Mihal. My Romanian is good enough to get by, but I’m far from fluent. Medical terminology is out of my league.”

Nicole hugged her. “You poor thing. You look exhausted.”

“I just don’t understand why this is happening. He was fine earlier today, wasn’t he?” We murmured varying assurances that yes, he’d been fine. “Then what the hell happened to him? I’m beginning to think this retreat is cursed.”

From the anxious faces around the table, it was clear she wasn’t the only one.

“Where’s Kate?”

The question caught me unaware. “Huh?”

Melanie straightened. “Oh no, please tell me something hasn’t happened to her too.”

“She’s fine. She went to her room to freshen up after dinner,” I lied, hoping the others would go along with it. “I should check on her, though. It has been a while.” Dammit, Kate, what’s taking you so long?

“Please do. We can discuss what we want to do about the retreat tomorrow, since obviously Wes isn’t going to be able to teach, but from now on, I don’t think we should separate. Everyone should have someone with them at all times.”

“Greta…” Stacey and Nicole said in unison.

“I’ll go.” Bracken downed his drink and left the table.

We split up once we reached the stairs, as Greta’s room was on the main floor, just off the dining room.
