CHAPTER 12

Imelda

I look at myself in the mirror. My cheeks are flushed, and my hair is messy. Despite looking imperfect, I look … happy. Happier than I’ve been in a long time.

The last time I remember being happy was before my older sister Eva was sold in marriage. When my three sisters and I were still together. Since Eva and Greta were married, I’ve felt all on my own. Sienna, with her teenage moodiness, was never much company.

But now I have Dimitri.

He’s brought a spark back to my life. Given me something to look forward to.

Now, all I need to do is make it through with Dario until I can be with Dimitri. I’m not sure how long I’ll need to be married to him before Dimitri takes care of everything. He said he didn’t want me getting into trouble for Dario’s death, and it would look suspicious if he died so soon after getting married.

I’m still not comfortable with the idea of Dario dying. Sure, I don’t like him, but I would never wish death upon him. I would just prefer not to be with him. But if he needs to die for me to get the life I want, the life I crave, then that’s what it will have to be, even if I feel guilt deep in my gut.

I straighten my dress. As I do, I think of all the ways Dimitri had his hands on me, had his lips on me. The thought makes me flush again. I need to stop thinking about it if I’m going to look innocent in front of Dario. He can’t suspect a thing.

I hear the front door open and the familiar voice of Dario as he calls out, “Darling?”

I just hope that Dimitri got away before Dario saw him leaving. Granted, Dimitri is a very capable man—he runs the Russian mafia, after all. If he doesn’t want to be seen, he won’t be.

“Darling!” Dario calls again.

I roll my eyes, then compose my face as I step out of the bedroom. I can’t be in there right now. One look at the bed and everything Dimitri and I just did would be written all over my face.

I rush down the hallway and meet Dario at the top of the stairs.

“Darling, there you are,” he says, smiling.

A flash of guilt passes through me, but I remind myself that I had no say in marrying Dario. Our marriage wasn’t a choice. I don’t need to feel guilty.

“Hello,” I whisper.

Dario grabs my shoulders and plants a kiss on my cheek. I resist the urge to rub my face. “How’s my wonderful wife today?”

“You’re in a good mood,” I remark, taking a step away from him.

He taps me on the nose. I flinch. As usual, he either doesn’t notice or doesn’t care. “Because I just completed some good business. You remember Dimitri Belov, my new business partner.”

Flashes of Dimitri’s hands on me, his head between my legs, flits through my mind.

I clear my throat. “Yes, of course, I remember.
