Chapter 17 - Liam

IT WAS ELABORATE AND exactly like all the best proposals in the movies. And so not her style. Our marriage was a Band-Aid to Sadie. A quick fix; something temporary to be ripped off as quickly as possible. I figured, the further away from her dream proposal, the better.

“Can we get out of here?” Sadie whispered to me as we walked away from the park.

“Where do you want to go?”

She squinted in the camera flashes. “Anywhere where they aren’t...”

Our engagement was like blood in the water for these sharks and more kept showing up. They usually kept a respectable distance, but tonight they were blocking our way and were more aggressive than I’d ever seen them. I held my arm out to keep them at bay and wrapped Sadie in tightly to me with my other. She buried her face in my chest and together we speed-walked to meet Hugo.

“Can you lose them, Hugo?” I shouted as we slammed the door shut.

“Yes, Boss,” answered Hugo smiling as he nodded into the rearview mirror. He loved it when I gave him permission to drive fast and recklessly, but there were too many photographers around the car, and we crept through the throng until we reached the highway.

I fully expected her to shimmy away from me once we were in the safety of the limo, but Sadie didn’t seem to realize that she was still tucked in the nook of my arm. I held perfectly still, hoping to keep it that way. She brought out the protector in me. I wanted to punch every single one of those leeches who shouted cruel things at her. I want to keep her safe.

“We did it,” I whispered to her.

“I could kill you.” She pressed her hands into my ribcage and pushed herself away from me.

“Why?”

“Why did it have to be so elaborate? So... public.”

“You’re lucky. My original plan included the entire symphony.” I smiled at her, but she didn’t return it. I continued, shifting the blame for the pubic proposal to where it belonged - with someone else. “Mindy said that it should be believable and that the public should know about it.”

Sadie sat up and stared at me. “Liam Titan, did you or one of your cronies tell the paparazzi we would be at the sandwich shop tonight?”

I scratched at my neck. I didn’t want to lie to her. “I think that Mindy’s assistant might have called one or two of them.”

Sadie groaned and leaned back into the seat of the car. “Tonight, was terrible, Liam.”

My stomach dropped. “That’s a bit harsh, don’t you think?”

Her eyes softened. “I had fun with you. But I don’t know how you live like that. In the spotlight all the time.”

“I guess I’m just used to it.” I shrugged.

“Well, I’m not,” she snapped. “And I don’t appreciate being ambushed like that.” She turned and stared out the window. “To them, you’re the billionaire with expensive taste and trophy girlfriends. Me. I’m the over the hill cougar that has somehow managed to snag the most eligible bachelor in the state.
