The Issues—The Negro and the Parties (1924)

African American voters became increasingly important in electoral politics during the 1920s. They gained suffrage through the Great Migration by fleeing the South’s repressive Jim Crow and used their newly accorded voting rights to influence all levels of government. Randolph reached out to this newly enfranchised group, arguing that Republicans and Democrats had poor records on important civil rights issues. Only the Progressives, he said, seemed to offer a difference. This third party fared well in the 1924 presidential election. Republican candidate Calvin Coolidge won in a landslide against the Democratic challenger, John Davis, while Robert La Follette, the Progressive candidate, took home 17 percent of the popular vote.
