On Sunday morning, my parents pick me up again and take me back to their hotel to eat breakfast. Eating scrambled eggs, sugary cereal, and a biscuit, with orange juice to drink, makes me think of Gordon. He’s such a great cook, and he would be horrified to see me eating this lackluster meal.

“What are you doing for the rest of the day?” Mom asks conversationally as we eat.

“I’m not sure,” I lie. I’m spending as much time in the Learning Lab today as I can. I’m so close to finishing this project, I can practically taste it—unlike these eggs. “Jess and I may host a game night.” Lie. Although, she would probably love that.

“Oh, that’ll be fun! Do you girls do that a lot?”

“Not as much as we should, but as the end of the school year gets closer, um—” I freeze and nearly fall out of my chair. Gordon walks into the dining room. My—I need to concentrate! “People start looking for more creative ways to have fun.” Because of the angle my chair is facing, I see him go up to the breakfast counter and put food on his plate. The bland, undignified foods he would normally never eat. What is he doing here?

“Well, that’s good. That sounds like fun.” Mom doesn’t sound like she noticed my one-second mental breakdown. “You should be having fun with your friends as much as possible.”

“Yeah, absolutely,” I say mindlessly, even though I barely heard what she said.

Gordon sits two tables away and starts eating. He doesn’t have much on his plate—just a little bit of scrambled eggs, a single piece of toast, and a cup of water. Almost like he’s more concerned with physically being in the room than eating breakfast. I’m trying really hard not to stare at him. I know he saw me because he winked at me as he sat down, but otherwise, he doesn’t acknowledge me at all.

“What kinds of games do you like to play?” Mom asks.

“Oh, you know, standard party games.” My voice sounds a million miles away, even to my own ears. “Apples to Apples, Yahtzee, Uno, things like that.”

“That sounds like so much fun,” Mom says excitedly.

“Yeah, it does.” The more I talk about it, it does sound like fun. I’m kind of sad that I made the whole thing up. “I have to go to the bathroom. I’ll be right back.”

I saw bathrooms right outside the dining room when I came in, so it seems like a good excuse to get out of here. I walk out of the room, but as soon as I’m outside and around the corner, I stop and lean back against the wall.

A few seconds later, Gordon walks out, too. I reach out and grab his arm. “Hey. What are you doing here?”

“Eating breakfast. Solid two stars.” He smiles and kisses me, and my heart flutters. “Hello, by the way. It’s nice to see you.”

“What are you doing here?” I ask again. I’m still holding onto him, just because I want to keep touching him.
