Chapter Four

Redic was waiting, and Sela, the head of HR, had been waiting too, taking Grunk by the arm and leading him, quite firmly, away.

"Come with me, Kyfan," said Redic. "We have things to discuss."

"Steron..." Kyfan looked down the hall where Sela was leading Grunk to another office.

"Nonsense. He's your employer. Come along." Redic's words were clipped, the man clearly disapproving.

"Steron!" He shouted it this time, suddenly scared.

He felt more than heard Grunk's rumbling growl, then Grunk was by his side. "This is Kyfan-Shian. Anything you have to say to him, you will say to me."

"No one has bonded with this one. He's past the age of first-bonding, especially with someone as powerful as you, Fal Grunk-Cele."

Kyfan winced, head ducking, flooded with sudden shame.

"Do not tell me how I feel. I know what I know."

"Fal Sela?" Redic turned to her, as if for support.

She looked at Redic, then at Grunk, then at him. "Why would I interfere in a bond? If Fal Grunk-Cele claims Fal Kyfan, then he does. It is not my place to suggest the bond is not true or that either of them are not worthy."

"Exactly." Grunk nodded, arm coming around Kyfan's shoulders. It made him feel warm and safe. "What do you want, Redic? My little dragon and I need to visit the council and let them know."

Face quite red, Redic looked apoplectic. "This is Kyfan! He's..."

Kyfan rolled his eyes. Redic had never cared for him, for his skills. He thought the man was jealous because he'd worked in the president's office, had gone to all the balls and met all the dignitaries.

Redic roared at him, teeth bared. "Do not disrespect me, Kyfan!"

Grunk moved to stand between him and Redic and roared right back, the smell of smoke suddenly strong in the air. "He is mine, Redic. Make sure you do not disrespect me or what is mine."

Kyfan began to back away, shaking, the fury of the big males more than he could deal with. In fact Grunk looked like he was about to shift. Fal Sela called for security, and Kyfan pressed back against the wall. How had he landed in the center of this?

"What do you want of Kyfan-Shian?" demanded Grunk.

"I'm sorry, Fal Sela." Kyfan wouldn't look at her, but he needed to apologize for the trouble he was causing.

She rumbled and wrapped an arm around him. "Come with me. Let them have their pissing contest."

Kyfan nearly refused to go with her; could they do that?

It seemed they could, neither Redic nor Grunk stopping them as they walked out.

"Would you like to go home for the day, child?" Sela asked him gently.

"Can I do that?"

She nodded. "This is most odd, a pair-bonding at your age. Most dragons bond as fledglings, then come to the city to work. You're special."

"Different." He always had been different. Little. Unbonded.

"Special," Sela insisted. "Go home. I will tell your heartmate where to find you, if you wish."

Kyfan nodded, but honestly, he believed Grunk would discover him, no matter where he was.
