In the 2006 Memphis Flower Show, Maryjo Garre of Barrington, Illinois, chose a painting by Burton Callicott titled Sunlight on Stripes. Where the artist saw sunlight, Maryjo saw lightbulbs and asked her husband, Sandy, if he could cut the metal ends off bulbs so she could put water in them. A hacksaw was the tool of choice. She searched for a votive candleholder with many openings and found this one, which she painted red, at Target. Yellow food coloring in a glass container of water and a stripe of masking tape painted blue echo the yellow and blue in the painting. White hydrangea blossoms turned on the power in a class titled “Light, Line, and Laughter.” © copyright Whitney McNeill
