I can’t believe what I’m seeing.

I rub my eyes and look at my computer screen again, willing the image to be different, the name to be different, something, anything to indicate Zoe, my Zoe isn’t the same woman staring back at me. But no, there it is again, a warrant for her arrest in bold letters.

What the fuck?

I’m shocked, angry, and hurt. Could it be true? Why didn’t she tell me? What is she running from? It’s hard to believe the woman I’ve spent the last week with—the woman I made love to just a few short hours ago—could be the same woman accused of these serious crimes. Like, prison time serious. I may have gotten her out of a fine and a night in the holding cell for trespassing on Mr. Leroy’s property, but I don’t have the kind of power to get her off the hook for this.

Long moments pass where I'm just staring at the screen, scrolling through the stills from the CCTV cameras she was caught on. It looks like Zoe drove a beat-up old car half way across the country until it broke down outside of Middleton, the next town over. The car was found abandoned on the side of a back country road, covered in snow.

I start to get a clearer picture of what happened before I found Zoe. The car must have broken down, forcing her to walk to the nearest town—Still Creek. For the millionth time since Zoe came into my life, I wonder what she’s running from.

It was almost impossible leaving Zoe this morning, especially after I told her I loved her. I knew she wasn’t ready to say it back, but I needed her to know where I stood. That hasn’t changed, but I’m not sure how to reconcile the soft, sweet woman I held in my arms a few hours ago with the woman I’m looking at on the screen.

I want to understand her, to understand her fear and what danger she found herself in that she felt she had to commit some serious crimes to escape. That has to be why she did it. There’s no way my angel is a manipulative, dangerous criminal.

Then again, isn’t that exactly what a manipulative, dangerous criminal would want you to think?

I banish that thought as soon as it forms. No way. My cop instincts are on high alert, trying to figure her out and fit her to the crimes she’s committed. But another part of me, one I’ve only recently discovered, takes over. Despite the overwhelming evidence of her crimes—the title of her vehicle registered to someone else, the charges filed against her for assault, the photos of a trailer with broken windows and fire damage—I know there’s more to the story.

Suddenly I remember the conversation we had right before I left for work.
