Rebus and Ellen Wylie were back at Whitemire. An interpreter had been brought in from Glasgowâs Kurdish community. She was a small, bustling woman who spoke with a broad west-coast accent and wore a lot of gold and layers of bright clothing. To Rebusâs eyes, she looked as if she should be reading palms in a fairground caravan. Instead, she was sitting at a table in the cafeteria with Mrs. Yurgii, the two detectives, and Alan Traynor. Rebus had told Traynor that theyâd be fine on their own, but heâd insisted on being present, sitting a little apart from the group, arms folded. There were staff in the cafeteriaâcleaners and cooks. Pots occasionally clanked onto metal surfaces, causing Mrs. Yurgii to jump every time. Her children were being looked after in their room. She carried a handkerchief with her, rolled around the fingers of her right hand.
It was Ellen Wylie who had found the interpreter; and it was Wylie who asked the questions.
âDid she never hear from her husband? Never try contacting him?â
The translated question would follow, and then the answer, translated back into English again.
âHow could she? She didnât know where he was.â
âInmates are allowed to make phone calls out,â Traynor clarified. âThereâs a pay phone . . . theyâre welcome to use it.â
âIf they have the money,â the interpreter snapped.
âHe never tried contacting her?â Wylie persisted.
âItâs always possible he heard things from those on the outside,â the interpreter answered, without posing the question to the widow.
âHow do you mean?â
âIâm assuming people do actually leave this place?â Again she glared at Traynor.
âMost are sent home,â he retorted.
âTo be disappeared,â she spat back.
âActually,â Rebus interrupted, âitâs true that some people are bailed out of here, arenât they, Mr. Traynor?â
âThatâs right. If someone stands as a referee . . .â
âAnd thatâs how Stef Yurgii might have heard news of his familyâfrom people he met whoâd been in here.â
Traynor looked skeptical.
âDo you have a list?â Rebus asked.
âA list?â
âOf people whoâve been bailed.â
âOf course we do.â
âAnd the addresses theyâre staying at?â Traynor nodded. âSo it would be easy to say how many of them are in Edinburgh, maybe even in Knoxland itself?â
âI donât think you understand the system, Inspector. How many people in Knoxland do you think would give shelter to an asylum seeker? I admit I donât know the place, but from what Iâve seen in the newspapers . . .â
âYouâve got a point,â Rebus agreed. âBut all the same, maybe you could pull those records for me?â
âTheyâre confidential.â
âI donât need to see all of them. Just the ones living in Edinburgh.â
âAnd just the Kurds?â Traynor added.
âI suppose so, yes.â
âWell, thatâs feasible, I suppose.â Traynor still sounded less than enthusiastic.
âMaybe you could do it now, while weâre talking to Mrs. Yurgii?â
âIâll do it later.â
âOr one of your staff . . . ?â
âLater, Inspector.â Traynor had firmed up his voice. Mrs. Yurgii was talking. The interpreter nodded when sheâd finished.
âStef could not go home. They would kill him. He was a human rights journalist.
