It felt nothing short of bizarre to head back to his apartment alone. It had been a long and trying night for many reasons. Logan couldn’t figure out what was worse – that he’d lost his connection with Helen, a comrade who, despite her advances, was as broken and ruined as he was, or that he had no daughter to take home.

The living room felt emptier than ever. In fact, it no longer felt like his home. These were simply walls that protected his belongings. The food was just food designed to keep a human alive. The furniture was just something from an old store that was mostly going to stay empty. There wouldn’t be any cries of laughter or tears of joy as they cuddled on the couch. There would be no Amber Fox, resting in bed for days while she recovered from a few traumatic years. There was only solitude, and he hated it.

Like many damaged men would, Logan took to the Jack Daniels that was tucked away in the back of the cupboard. He spared himself the glass and drank straight from the bottle. As he came back to sit down, knocking erupted on his door.

“Logan?” Maggie said through the wood. “Logan, it’s me. Open up.”

Logan just sat there, staring at the door as he took a long draw of Jack. He let the warm liquid prick his tongue, then swallowed it in one satisfying gulp. The knocking continued, a new headache lodging itself in his skull.

“Please, Logan. I saw what happened on TV. We need to talk.”

“Not now,” he called angrily.

“You can’t do this alone.”

“Watch me,” he mumbled as he got up, heading into the bedroom and closing the door.

Before he took a seat, he made a nest of the duvet that enabled him to sit upright. Logan slumped into the bed and continued to drink until the knocking stopped and the whiskey vanished. When the early hours came and he had stared at the wall for long enough, he finally did what he hadn’t been able to do for days.

Despite his demons, he slept.
