The scent of peppermint, always reminds me of Christmas candy canes, and by proxy, reminds me of Brodie and Paul. Together with Sara, during grade seven and eight, the four of us would hang out on most weekends.

Looking back now, although our friendships were anything but sexual, there was definitely an undercurrent of innocent sexual tension, that we were all oblivious too.

Many days were spent deep in the bush re-enacting our favourite TV shows, usually with a story line that would always centre on a bad guy stealing away with the girl, who would later be found tied up, and rescued by the good guy.

Funnily enough, when Sara or I wanted to play the role of the baddie, there was always a chorus of complaints from Brodie and Paul - You don’t tie us up tight enough, you take too long to find us, or, it’s our job to save you. Looking back, and knowing who I am now, I know I definitely enjoyed being tied up, and rescued…especially by Brodie.

The weather that Christmas holidays had been miserable and wet, which meant most days were spent inside at either my place, or Sara’s. At my house, we spent many of those hours stowed away in my cubby. Usually with a portable dvd player on a milk crate, snuggle down in amongst blankets and pillows, captivated by the small screened drama unfolding in front of us. Only when a movie had finished, and the good guys had saved the day, were we allowed to break for necessities, which was code for a fridge and pantry raid.

On a day when Sara had been grounded for getting home late the day before, Brodie, Paul and I raided my Christmas tree of all the remaining candy canes, and snuck my Dad’s copy of Mr. & Mrs. Smith out to the cubby house. Blame it on the sexual tension oozing from the movie, or the fact there were only the three of us, but our sexual non-awareness of each other started to lessen. Even now, I can remember what it felt like to lie between them, resting my head against Brodie’s shoulder, while Paul snuggled into my back as we watched the movie.

With all the snacks eaten, we were down to a sole peppermint candy cane, that all three of us wanted to eat. After several rounds of rock, paper, scissors, I had won. With the crook in my mouth, I announced the winner of ‘guess my number’ could bite the end off of my cane. As the guys wrote their numbers down on some scrap paper, I decided that Brodie would already be the winner – no matter what his number was.

As Brodie handed me his number to read out aloud, I faked the surprise in my voice, and announced that with the number three, he was the winner. He looked over at Paul and laughed, as Paul held up his own piece of paper, displaying the number three as well.

Oh yeah, I’d been played.
