CHAPTER FIVE

I tripped over a pile of books entering the apartment.

"Don't you ever clean this place up?"

"It's clean. A little untidy, I'll admit, but you could eat off the floor."

"At the moment, I'd rather lie on it. I'm beat."

"Delightful image. Care to join me?" Karen dropped her coat on the rug and crumpled herself down upon it, her pose languid and waiting.

So much blondeness. White and gold against a background of red.

I walked away, my jaw set. Angrily, I shoved the hanger bearing my coat into the closet. Several minutes were spent digging in my pocketbook for cigarettes suddenly turned elusive.

I returned to the living room, my head bent over a flaming match.

Karen was still lying on the floor. Her eyes closed, fingers loosened, she looked asleep. I knew she wasn't.

I stood above her not knowing what to do next.

"Say something."

Karen opened her eyes and smiled languidly.

"What would you like me to say?" She twisted her body, drawing her skirt up above her knees. "I’ll say anything you'd like. This is the first time in ages we've been alone together so will ‘hello' do for a start?"

I grinned. "Appropriate but inadequate."

"May I add that I've missed you."

"You have an odd way of showing it. I saw you holding hands with Helen, you know. Are you sure you wouldn't rather have her here?"

"Uh-uh, don't get morbid. It's up to you to blind me to Helen's charms. Come, offer me something which will blind me to all others."

"You're the hostess, Karen. You're supposed to be giving me tokens of your hospitality. Well, what am I going to get?"

"Everything you deserve, darling. Everything you deserve."

* * *

The next morning, lying in bed listening to the comfortable sound of Karen's relaxed breathing, I debated with myself whether or not to regret the previous night. Would I come to feel as I had so often in the past that I had lived one day too long? The previous night had been so beautiful, so complete in itself. Immersed in love, past hurts had disappeared, future sorrows rendered improbable.

Was it worth it? To love a human being as one loves beauty? Fully, without hope. It was impossible, of course, to suspend possessiveness. But for the moment, holding Karen in my arms, I had possessed her.

Karen pulled the strings, there was no denying that. She didn't even attempt to hide the pleasure she derived from exercising her power. Control slipped away from her in bed, however. Lust was Karen's undoing.

I adored Karen at those moments when I could call forth unreasoning passion in her. And then the utter dependence of the act of love itself. In my hands, in my lips lay the capacity to bring Karen to the point—and then to leave her undone, possessed.

I turned on my side and fed my eyes on Karen's lush blondeness. With my hand I brushed a lock of hair from her forehead.

Karen opened her eyes and smiled sleepily. "Morning?"

"No. You."

"Love me?"

"Do I have a choice?"

"No." Karen extended her arms toward me.
