Learning to Enjoy Life

This seems like a very simple concept, but it isn’t. As the other areas of my life started to fall into place, finding what I liked to do was challenging. Part of the problem was that, up until this point, the things I enjoyed doing the most always involved my family or significant other. It became frustrating not knowing what made me happy.

Of course, I scoured the internet to find the answers. YouTube was my best friend.

I thought about traveling, picking up new hobbies, pursuing childhood dreams, and even changing careers, all of which turned out to be short-lived endeavors. Just the other day a co-worker made a valid point to me. As humans we have a tendency to think about the things we want to do when we can’t do them, but when we have time to do what we want, we realize we actually don’t like doing them. Funny how that works out.

This concept works the same with relationships. When you are in one, there are always things that are wrong and you want out. And when you don’t have a relationship, you feel like you would sacrifice anything to be in one.

This comes from dissatisfaction. Undesirable conditions lead us to believe things outside of our immediate circumstance are more exciting. All these things are directly related to self-love. With self-love comes gratitude, and gratitude is the opposite of dissatisfaction. Therefore, learning to find things we truly enjoy doing by ourselves is a practice of self-love.
