âWE DONâT NEED TO BE DRIVEN to New York City,â Christopher told Samson Willis as soon as he and Lesley emerged from the house. Samson had brought up one of the black sedans and a driver was waiting. âWhere are the keys to my automobile?â
âItâs no problem for us. These guys need something to do.â
âThat all might be true, but this is a personal thing. I donât even know why youâre all here. Just give me my keys,â he added firmly.
Samson Willis looked away. His calmness no matter how upset they were was beginning to infuriate Christopher. Lesley was already struggling to keep her boiling rage under a weakening lid.
âAre you deaf? Give him his fucking keys,â she snapped.
Samsonâs eyebrows rose and a slight, impish grin began to form at the corners of his mouth.
âIâve heard artistic people are highly emotional.â
She glared at him. He turned to Christopher.
âLook, Dr. Drew, I just follow orders. For whatever reason or reasons there are, you have become a subject of very high interest and importance. Weâve been given the responsibility of protecting you, your people, and your work here. Itâs beyond both of us,â he concluded.
âWhat kind of bullshitâ¦â
Lesley actually took a step toward him as if she would slap him. He didnât wince nor retreat. Instead, he stepped to his left and opened the rear door of the sedan.
âYouâre wasting precious time,â he said dryly.
Christopherâs shoulders slumped. He looked at Lesley and then stepped toward the car.
âWeâve got to get there,â he told her.
âThis is such a load of crap. You people have nothing significant to do with yourselves so you make things up,â she told Samson Willis. He stood holding the door open, his face barely softening. Even his eyes were dead cold. He was like stone. Lesley saw it was futile to try to insult him. She muttered another profanity and got into the sedan.
âBetter you than me,â Samson told Christopher when he glanced at him. He nodded after Lesley.
âI assure you, this is all coming to a quick end,â Christopher told him.
Samson Willis gave him one of his noncommital, unaffected shrugs again.
âIâm here. Iâm there. Itâs all the same to me, Dr. Drew.â
He closed the door behind him.
The driver was the same man who had driven Christopher from the airport and beside him was the identical other agent. They started away. Both he and Lesley were still so angry, neither spoke. They heard the wheels crackle over the gravel drive. Christopher looked left and saw Shelly and Kirkwood in the research center doorway. Shelly waved and Kirkwood nodded. They both looked very dire, Christopher thought. He was blocking any darkness from his own thinking and his own heart. As if she could read his thoughts, Lesley reached over and took his hand into hers.
He smiled at her. And then he looked back as they approached the end of the driveway. Another black sedan was following. As they turned out, they looked at the overturned vehicle in the ditch. A tow truck had just hooked up to it and was beginning to drag it out.
