Chapter 13

“That did not go well,” Amadus said to Jaydsen as the surroundings shifted back from something that was known as a ‘school’ in the world of Humans to the more familiar dream launch area. One by one, the other players in the crowd reappeared and headed for other assignments. Right now, Amadus and Jaydsen were assigned primarily to Hannah.

“No?” she cocked her head to the side, flipping her golden hair off her shoulders in a way that was distinctly Human. “You were the one who just had to appear as Josh,” she snapped.

“Yeah, but who was it who let her amethyst eyes show through at the end of the dream? Besides, she chose to see me as Josh. I don’t write the script. I just read it in their minds.” He crossed his arms defiantly.

“Yes, and I suppose she chose to see Matt, too.” She turned from him, fighting the urge to say more. She knew that residuals of the roles they’d assumed in Hannah’s dream were still clinging to them. It always took some time for that residual to be completely eliminated. Unfortunately, the more emotional the Human was, the longer it took for the Ethereal to completely return to normal.

And Hannah’s dreams had been extremely emotional of late.

Jaydsen felt for Hannah. She knew that right after her parents were killed, the Others had begun to infiltrate her dreams, making her relive the night her parents died. There were several strong Mind Warriors among their kind, as well as some pretty talented Empaths.

She turned to Amadus and tried to force herself to speak kindly, without what the Humans would call ‘a tone’.

“Josh is no longer in Valeria.”

Amadus looked at her quizzically. “So he’s gone back to Earth? That’s a good thing, right? It would explain why Hannah changed my character to Matt.”

Jaydsen closed her eyes, fighting to shake the effects of the dream. There was something she needed to remember. Ethereal memories were usually distorted when coming out of a dream interaction, intertwined with what they had experienced when they were participating in the dream. It could take anywhere from minutes to hours to regain one’s sense of self, including separating their memories from those of the dreamer.

“I don’t get it,” Amadus said, reverting again to human terminology. “Isn’t it good news that he has returned to his home?”

Jaydsen frowned slightly. She was starting to recall her last interaction with Matt. “I believe he left before he could resolve some questions he had about Michael. He feels Michael deceived him and Hannah in some way.”

Amadus’s copper eyes grew dark. “That would not be in line with what we know of Michael. Almost from the beginning, we have known he was Human. He has never tried to deceive us in any way.”

“Yes, but he showed his Humanity to you because you are in charge of making the dream assignments. It would have come out sooner or later that he wasn’t Ethereal.” She crossed her arms in the style of Human defiance.
