TWENTY-THREE

The journey back to Rydal Falls was silent. Both Ben and Morgan were too absorbed in the post-mortem results and what that meant for Sara Fletcher. Ben’s phone began to ring, making them both jump. Morgan was driving, and she glanced at him as he answered.

‘Matthews.’

‘This is Glenn Shields, Force Incident Manager at Greater Manchester Police. Is this Sergeant Matthews?’

He sat up straight. ‘Yes, speaking.’

‘I have some good news for you. We have your suspect in custody.’

‘You do, really? That’s brilliant work, thank you.’

‘What are you planning on doing with him?’

‘We need to interview him as soon as possible; can we drive down first thing in the morning and speak to him?’

‘Be my guest. I have to warn you he was claiming he had no idea what we were talking about when we arrested him. Then again, don’t they all?’

Ben laughed. ‘Yeah, most of them do. Thank you; which station is he being held at?’

‘He’s currently at Stretford on Talbot Road. If you go there, someone will meet you at the front office. Have a safe journey down.’

The line went dead before he could say anything else. ‘Did you hear that?’

Morgan nodded. ‘Are we going right now? I’ll let Tom know we’re going to speak to Daryl Harper and maybe bring him back with us.’

Ben looked down at his watch. Where had the time gone? It was almost eleven.

‘I feel as if we should, but it’s been a very long day and I think maybe we should get some sleep and have an early start, if that’s okay with you. We could meet at the station at five.’

Morgan nodded. ‘Whatever you think.’

They left the car at the station, getting straight into their own vehicles, and Ben wondered if this was the wrong thing. Should they go to Manchester now? Morgan let out a huge yawn and he copied her, realising that although time wasn’t on their side they’d be no good to Sara Fletcher if one of them fell asleep at the wheel on the motorway. They needed to rest even if it was just a few hours and hopefully the traffic would be lighter on a Sunday.
