That last text was sent a little over an hour ago.

Me: I’m sorry. Don’t call the police. I’m fine, I promise.

Me: My phone was dead.

Jenny: Oh, thank God. Where have you been?

She didn’t give me any time to respond. She FaceTimed me instead. I hit accept immediately, and her face popped up on the screen.

“Hey, you.” I smiled at my sister, but she only scowled.

“Don’t hey you, me. Where the fuck have you been?” She seemed a little upset.

I let out a loud sigh, but instead of explaining, I knew exactly what would fix her mood. I leaned into Camden and turned the phone so she could see us both. Jenny’s face immediately softened when Camden smiled and waved.

“Hey, Jenny. How are you?”

Her jaw dropped, but she quickly recovered. “Oh my God, are you all right, Camden? My sister was beside herself when you crashed. I don’t think I’ve ever heard such a blood-curdling scream before in my life. She was so upset—”

“All right, that’s enough. I think Cam gets the idea.” I sat up straight and gave her the stink eye. I was going to kill my sister later for that.

Cam snatched the phone from my hand. “I would love to hear more.” He side-eyed me. “So blood-curdling scream, huh?”

“What the fuck? Don’t you have your own peeps to call? Leave mine alone.” I grabbed the phone back, but he just laughed at me.

“So Jenny, now that you know I’m alive and have embarrassed the ever-loving shit out of me, is there anything else you need?” I didn’t mean to sound snippy, but my sister had zero filters and never had. She’d embarrassed me more times than I could count.

She laughed off my bitchiness. “Nope. I just wanted to make sure you were alive and hadn’t gone off the deep end, waiting to hear from Camden. Last I heard from you, you were having a complete meltdown.”

“Okay enough. Love you. I’m fine. Bye.” I hung up without another word and sent her a text telling her she was dead to me.

“So…a complete meltdown? I had no idea you had such strong feelings for me, Lindsay.” Camden’s tone was laced with humor, but my cheeks flamed red regardless.

I put on a brave face and turned to him. “Don’t flatter yourself, Cam. I have the same reaction every time there’s a crash in a race. Don’t you?”

“Hmm…blood-curdling screams and complete meltdowns? Nope can’t say that I’ve ever seen that let alone done it. Wait. How often do you watch races?”

I squared my shoulders and sat up straighter. “Every chance I get. It was always mine and my dad’s thing. And for the record, my sister was overexaggerating. It was a little scream and a few tears.”

“Aw!” He pulled me into his chest and stroked my head. “You cried, too? So sweet.”

“Shut it.” I hadn’t meant to tell him that I’d cried. “It was scary, okay? I’ve never actually known a driver who has crashed. It scared the shit out of me.” I pushed against his chest, but he only loosened his grip slightly.
