Chapter Twenty
Too Much of an Audience
âLook, Iâm sorry I was somewhere else last night. Itâs just that Iâm remembering at last.â
âWhateverâs important to you, Paul.â As Caren gazes at him over the breakfast heâs made, her eyes keep their feelings to themselves. âWhat have you remembered?â she presumably wants to hear.
âWhy I couldnât stand to live there any more. Winifred Staveley didnât only follow me to university, she sent the police after my friend because I was staying at his house.â
Caren takes a sip of orange juice, a token acknowledgment of breakfast. âWhat happened?â
âThe policeman was a friend of Cyprianâs family, or at least he didnât want to make trouble for them. They were growing cannabis, but he let Cyprian off with a warning.â
âMaybe your guardian wasnât so wrong. I wouldnât touch the stuff.â
âI havenât since, but youâre missing the point. Winifred didnât know about it. She was just trying to leave me nowhere to go except home.â
Heâs unsure why Caren looks concerned until she says âWhat did it do to you?â
âFellstones?â He nearly answers that, despite having no idea what heâs about to say. âThe dope? Nothing I need to remember.â
âUnless you should. Iâve heard of cases where using it just once has changed people for good, meaning nothing like good.â When Paul lets this go unchallenged she says âMight it have helped turn you against your guardians?â
âDonât forget your breakfast. Itâs going cold.â This sounds like Winifred, as if her influence has caught him after all. âMaybe it made me feel more trapped when I went home,â Paul says, âbut mostly they did.â
âAnd that was enough to make you change your name.â
âI promised myself Iâd get free once I finished university, and thatâs how I did.â
Caren sounds more disappointed than convinced. âSo thatâs what you were remembering when you went away from me.â
âNo, I remembered after youâd gone to sleep.â
âThen what were you saying that you didnât want me to hear?â
âWhy wouldnât I? Weâve got no secrets that I know of.â When she lays her knife and fork down, having picked them up as if sheâs about to accept a placatory offer, he says âI just didnât want it to distract us.â
âWell, it did, and Iâd like to know what it was.â
âJust some verse they must have taught me long ago. Iâm guessing it was for one of their festivals.â Her gaze wonât let him stop at that. âFall, stones, crawl, stones,â he says almost fast enough to leave the words behind. âBut I donât think thatâs all and no, I donât know what it means.â
Caren peppers her scrambled egg and takes a mouthful. âSo are you still planning to go home for the weekend?â she says once she can.
âI wouldnât call it home, but yes. I told everyone I would, and I can always get away when I want to.â He wonders if her gaze is prompting him to ask âWould you rather I didnât go?â
âItâs your decision, Paul. You donât want anybody influencing you.â
âThen Iâd better be off to work soon.
