After leaving Aaron at Sarahâs, I drove back to my place. I needed to trust her, but I was having a hard time. This was the first time heâd stayed overnight, and as much as I was hoping it would work, I was still worried. Becky was the only one whoâd ever kept Aaron for a sleepover. Sarah insisted that I was being overprotective, but I felt like I had to be. She hadnât proven herself to me, and I wasnât sure that sheâd ever meet my expectations.
When Iâd arrived home, Iâd planned to go over to Nickâs. I needed to talk to someone to keep me from sitting outside Sarahâs apartment as if I was on a stakeout. Nick was always good at talking me off the ledge. It seemed like a good plan until I turned into my driveway and noticed his house was dark. That was when I remembered that he and Leah werenât going to be home tonight. Some last hurrah for them before the baby came, or at least thatâs what I thought it was. I wondered where Emma was, and was surprised that Leah had agreed to leave her behind. Maybe her father had offered to take her.
After making my way into my dark house, I grabbed a beer out of my fridge, and made my way out onto my deck. It was a very dark night with only a few stars and the moon overhead. The anger that had been boiling in me for the past several months, the anger over the way my life had turned to shit began making its way to the surface. I had been pushing it down for so long, hiding it from my son and everyone around me, and I wasnât sure I could do it anymore. Just thinking about her hurt. Seeing her at the party. Feeling her in my arms again. Knowing what was under that sundress she wore. All of it was nothing but pure pain. Pain that was so strong it almost crippled me to watch her. Iâd avoided her at all cost, but seeing her in my house with my son once again was my undoing. Iâd rushed after her, prepared to tell her everything, but sheâd run. She pushed me away with anger in her eyes as she raced in the other direction as fast as she could. Iâd done this. Iâd ripped us apart, and I had no way of ever getting her back.
âFuuuuck!â I screamed as I tossed the empty beer bottle into the recycling can. I needed to let this out, but I had no idea how. I was alone. No one was around. No one would talk me down. There was no one who would tell me that it was going to get better, and the truth was, it wasnât. Iâd made sure that I was going to live here with Aaronâ alone with a shattered heart.
It took a few minutes of pacing, but knowing that I needed to do something, I began to jog down to the beach.
