CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Damien ogled Dillon, taking in her beauty. He loved her more than he thought loving someone was possible, but at this moment, he wanted to walk away. To say fuck it. His lips pinched together. Sighing exaggeratedly, he continued. “When we first spoke with Rossdale’s assistant, she gave us something. I never entered it into evidence, and I don’t plan on doing so.”

He reached around his back and grabbed the book. “It was this book. It has information on all kinds of people. Nothing horrible, but it was evident that Rossdale was good at finding secrets. Along with that book was a letter. I have read the…”

She pointed at him. “You have evidence that you haven’t turned in yet? Are you fucking out of your mind?” Dillon stood and stomped around the room. “I can’t believe I’m hearing this. What the hell is wrong with you men? I can’t believe you have withheld information that could help solve this case. It would go far in keeping the fucking Lockharts off my ass.”

“Are you serious right now? You’re worried about your ass?” Damien seethed.

Joe’s skin tingled as the air crackled with tension. “Okay, that’s it. What the hell is wrong with you two?” He moved to stand between them. “You,” he pointed towards Dillon, “I need you to calm the fuck down. Leave Agent McGrath at the door. We need Dillon.” He turned towards Damien. “You, shut the hell up. I’ll tell the damn story.”

Joe proceeded to explain the letter and all that was in it. At some point during the conversation, he could see the shift on Dillon’s face. Amazing what a little clarity can do for a situation. “So, now you should have a better understanding of what we are up against.”

Damien now spoke calmly. “We aren’t sure how far this goes up the chain. Someone five years ago had the power to cover up murders, make evidence disappear, and keep people quiet. The letter goes on to say that Rossdale thought he had a lead on something that would explain how the senior senator may have helped his son get his current legislative position. However, he doesn’t go into it, or he didn’t have enough to put it in this letter.”

Damien searched for the letter in the papers on his desk.

Joe nodded at Dillon. “Here’s the thing,” he handed the sketch of the murderer to Dillon. This guy is the one who was seen at the train station, and the boys who gave us this sketch were killed shortly after this. Damien and I think this guy is cleaning house. Whatever went down five years ago, is playing a huge roll in shit now.

“Rossdale was murdered because of something he found out about the Lockharts. The problem is we aren’t sure what exactly that is. Not to mention we don’t know who the fuck is pulling strings. Is it Robert Lockhart, or is he looking out for his kid? Is it whoever had these cases pulled five years ago, or is it this fucker?” Joe pointed to the sketch.
