“I wish it was different. I wish I could throw the rules out the

window and tell you to go for it, but you’re right.” She gave him a sad look. “I’m sorry. I really would say yes if I could. I think it’d be great for the kids to be a part of it.”

Landon shook his head. “Don’t be sorry. It’s not your fault.”

He sighed. “Char was really upset though, so I came up with

another idea.”

“Oh?”

“I was thinking that before class Charlotte could read the

story to her friends, and then I’ll propose.” He rushed to add,

“I’ve already talked to all the kids’ parents; they’re all on board.

I was hoping you could help me get them all together and make

this happen before class started?”

Dorothy’s eyes were bright as she sat in the opposite chair. “I

think that is a wonderful idea. I’ll be certain that Eve and I are here early and I’ll help you out.”

“Thanks Dorothy.” He reached over and squeezed her hand.

“You’re welcome. I’m honored to be a part of the big

moment.” Dorothy smiled at him.

“The girls and I have a few more things to do, but everything

will be ready by Friday. I’m thinking 7:30 is when we should

meet.”

“That’s perfect,” Dorothy agreed.

There was a knock at the door and Eve poked her head in.

“Finn is here again, Ms. Bridgeman.”

Dorothy sighed, stood, and smoothed out her skirt. “What

did he do this time?”

“Pasted Jeremy’s seat with glue, which led to Jeremy ripping

his pants.”

Shaking his head, Landon scooped Gracie into his arms. “I’ll

let you handle that. Thanks again.”

Dorothy hugged him and Gracie. “You’re welcome. I’m

looking forward to Friday.”

“Me too. Say bye-bye, Gracie.” He beamed as his daughter

waved at Dorothy, who waved back. Gracie waved at Eve as well

as they left the office.

Knowing he still had time before school was over, he sat

Gracie on the bench outside the office and used the baby wipes

to clean up her face and throw away the chewed up cracker. He

decided to go see Devin, but it wasn’t until he had waved at his

partner through the window on the door to his classroom that he

realized he needed a reason for being there this early.

He watched Devin speak to a teacher’s aide then excuse

himself. Landon stepped away from the door and Devin pulled

him in for a brief kiss then hugged Gracie, taking her as she held out her arms to him.

“Is everything okay?”

“Oh yeah, uh, we were just early and I thought we’d come

see you.”

Devin raised an eyebrow but cuddled Gracie. “Well, it is a

nice surprise.” He brushed his fingers through Gracie’s curls.

“What is Daddy up to, hmm?”

It was no easy feat keeping this secret from Devin and he

had to stop himself from giving it away. Instead, he tried to

think of something that would distract him and lead to another

conversation. “Gracie said a new word today and I didn’t want

to wait to tell you,” he deflected, though it was the truth — just a different one.

Devin’s eyes widened and he smiled at Gracie. “What did she

say?”

“Watch.
