CHAPTER 5
Suzanne sank onto a kitchen stool. âMy suspect list was on my phone.â She paled. âWhat if someone â the murderer â reads it? Theyâll know we suspect them!â
âBut right now we suspect everyone,â Maddie replied. âEverybodyâs name is on the list.â
âTrue.â Suzanne cheered up a little. âItâs not as if I wrote Autumn is the killer. Or Brenda is the killer.â
âI think we should search for it,â Maddie said.
âMrrow!â Trixie seemed to agree.
âIâll have to go the bathroom first.â Suzanne rose.
âIâll go, too.â
Each of them searched the downstairs bathroom, but Suzanneâs phone wasnât there.
âMaybe itâs in the great room,â Maddie suggested.
âItâs possible.â Suzanne shrugged. âI was having so much fun striking that triangle and making musical sounds that I didnât pay attention to much else.â
âI noticed.â Maddie giggled.
âMrrow!â
They trooped into the great room. Autumn was packing up the silver triangles and Edith, Brenda, and Linda were chatting amongst themselves.
âIâd suggest a walk now, ladies.â Autumn looked out of the window. It was still raining. âBut I think it might be too dangerous.â
âI hope itâs not raining tomorrow,â Edith murmured. âI donât want to have to drive all the way to Edmonds in weather like this.â
âMe either,â Linda replied. Then she stared at Edith. âYou donât live in Edmonds do you?â
âYes.â Edith nodded. âDo you?â
âNo, in Mount Vernon. Itâs fifty miles further on.â
âI know where it is.â Edithâs expression sagged. âThatâs where my grandmother came from.â
âWhat was her name?â Linda asked.
âEdith â like mine,â the girl replied.
The sixty-something woman stared at her. âEdith. Not Edith Lilly?â
âYes. That was her maiden name.â Edith looked puzzled at the query. âWhy?â
âNothing.â Linda shook her head and turned away abruptly.
Maddie and Suzanne exchanged a look. What was that all about?
âHas anyone seen Suzanneâs phone?â Maddie remembered why theyâd returned to the great room.
âNo, dear.â Autumn shook her head.
âNo,â Edith murmured.
âSorry,â Brenda said. âI hope you find it. I donât know how Iâd manage without mine.â
âExactly,â Suzanne said ruefully.
Lindaâs back was to everyone and she didnât answer.
Maddie and Suzanne raised their eyebrows at each other but didnât try to engage the older woman.
Autumn burrowed in her capacious jute bag and brought out some journals covered with wildflowers.
âI thought writing our feelings down would be one of the best ways to extract any negativity weâre feeling right now.â She handed everyone a slim hardcovered book and a pink pen.
Linda took the journal, sat down on the sofa, and started writing, her pen stabbing the pages as she wrote.
âMaybe I should check on Jenna,â the group leader fretted. âShe may want to talk to let her feelings out, or write them down.â Autumnâs gaze flickered over the journal in her lap.
âWould you like us to go up to her?â Suzanne asked.
âThank you, Suzanne, but I think I should go.â Autumn smiled.
Maddie sat on the sofa, Trixie hopping up beside her. She turned in a circle and then made herself comfortable, her fur touching Maddieâs thigh. She peered at the journal, as if expecting Maddie to open it.
