Chapter Eleven

I met with Thorn the next day to give him my statement about finding Dante’s body. I sat in my car for ten minutes before going into the station, debating about whether to wear the ring or not. I turned it around and around on my finger, and I wouldn’t realize until later that I was turning it counterclockwise.

In the end, I decided to wear it. He was going to find out eventually. If he hadn’t heard already, it would only be a matter of hours.

I took the knife with me too. The one Dante had used to stab me. Thorn didn’t know what had happened, and it wasn’t like he could write an official report about it, but it still felt like I should at least explain what had happened.

He stared at my ring the entire time I was talking. I watched as he would only write down the parts of my statement could go in the official record.

“Are you okay?” he asked me when I finally finished the story.

“I am,” I said. “I’m okay now.”

“You’re engaged to him, then?” Thorn’s voice was strained, and I could tell he was trying to hold back emotion.

I don’t know what it was about that, but it hurt my heart. I was supposed to be happy, but I would be fine once I got home and back to my new husband.

“Married,” I said. “We did a handfasting last night.”

“So, not legally married.”

“I don’t know why you felt like you had to point that out, but I’m going to let it go,” I said as gently as I could. “How is it going with your new lady friend?” I asked, not because I wanted to know but because I wanted to point out that he had someone else as well. It wasn’t just me. I wasn’t the only one who had torn us apart.

“It’s not,” he said through a tight semi-smile. “I would have talked to you about that, but there’s no point now.” He took a deep breath and straightened his back. “What I do want to ask you about is Detective Devereaux.”

“What about him?” I asked after swallowing the lump in my throat.

“Did he ever say anything or do anything that made you uncomfortable? I don’t know… Did he ever say anything or do anything that might have made you think he was… involved?”

“In the murder?” I asked.

“Yeah,” Thorn said.

“Not really. He was following us around, I guess. I didn’t think that was that unusual. Why do you ask?”

“I don’t know, Kinsley. The guy rubbed me the wrong way, so I started looking into him. He’s had a lot of problems with the department. Stuff that would have gotten him fired before Hurricane Lara and all of the police union changes that came along with it in Louisiana. A big part of me has to wonder if his chief let him come here because he wanted him out of his hair.”

“And you think he might have followed Liberty down here and killed her?” I asked.
