BEAU

I waited out back of the club, nodding and shaking hands with guests that chose to use the back entrance. My car with Rose inside was due to arrive any minute. The party was supposed to be a celebration of the revamped club and a general party to entice potential clients to use our club or other venues. It was a publicity stunt. We needed to drum up business and had planned this party over a month ago.

The party was quickly turning into a semi-engagement party. I didn’t want it to be that way, but people had been texting and calling all day to congratulate me. It was an added bonus. I saw a limo pull up and recognized the driver. She was here. I was very excited to see her. I stepped up and opened the back door.

“Damn,” I breathed as I helped her out of the car. “Woman, you know how to make me crazy.”

She leaned forward and kissed my cheek. “The dress is just part of it. You should see what’s under it.”

I growled and grabbed a handful of her perky ass. “You’re killing me. I’m going to shove you right back in that limo and have my way with you.”

“Nope,” she said and stepped away. “I put on this dress and did my hair and makeup because I want to drink champagne and be fancy. You’re not mussing me up yet.”

“Yet,” I hissed. “Yet.”

I took her hand and led her inside. I could feel her nervousness. The ring I had given her was on her finger. Her silver gown hugged her curves. I knew all eyes were going to be on her. No straight man could look away. I saw the way the women in the room were looking at her. Her hair was pulled up in a pretty style that left some of those gorgeous coppery curls hanging around her neck. She looked beautiful.

“Can we get a picture?” someone asked.

I looked to Rose. She put on a bright smile. “Of course,” she said.

We posed for a few pictures before making our way deeper into the club. I could feel everyone staring at us. There were plenty of whispers and ladies talking behind their purses. “You’re doing great,” I said.

“I know,” she said and flashed me a smile.

“Rose!” I heard someone say.

We were both caught off guard. No one knew her. If they did, this whole charade might be over. We spun around and saw Edie Rhodes coming our way. We both breathed a sigh of relief.

“Hi, Edie,” Rose said with a bright smile. “It’s so good to see you.”

“How are you?” Edie said and kissed her cheek.

“I’m good. How about you? How’s your precious plant?”

Edie frowned. “It’s probably not going to make it.” She sighed. “The gardener took your advice and pulled it out of my garden, but it might be too late.”

“Oh no,” Rose pouted. “I’m sorry. It was such a beautiful plant.”

“I know,” Edie said. “I’m not giving up hope. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
