A hint of apple scented Madeline’s breath, making Nick want to taste her succulent lower lip and drink in her unique flavor. “An interesting proposition,” he said, his voice calm though blood thundered in his ears with the sound of a thousand beating drums. “Care to elaborate?”

“Propose here. Now. In front of everyone.” She feathered her fingers across his jaw. “That’ll prove to Howard that we’re a real couple and make him more agreeable about selling the Inferno.”

It would also keep the bastard from trying to cop a feel off his woman. Wait. His woman? What the fuck was that all about? She wasn’t his, but everything in him wanted to protect her. Temporarily. Until he obliterated Howard’s nightclub, and then he’d move on to his next venture without her in the picture.

Besides, why the change of heart? Seemed like a complete about face and he didn’t trust her change of mind. But hell. He wanted her

He clasped her hand and brought it to his mouth, kissed the top, still swaying to the ballad’s sensual rhythm. “Good thing I’m like a boy scout,” he said. “Totally prepared.”

“You have the ring with you?”

“Among other things.”

Her breath hitched and a flush traveled from the top of her ample cleavage all the way into her cheeks. “That’s what I like about you. You’re always one step ahead of the game. But then you’ve had years of practice. Maybe you can teach me a trick or two before we go our separate ways.”

A band compressed around his chest. Leaving her behind would be more difficult than he’d expected. Somehow, she’d gotten under his skin, tunneled dangerously close to his heart. Good thing he had everything under control, and he always trusted his instincts. Otherwise, he’d cave to the feelings she’d stirred to life.

Feelings were okay if he didn’t let them guide his decisions. Feelings only clouded his judgment and could lead to disaster. Feelings had no place in this arrangement.

But they existed whether he wanted to acknowledge them or not. Shit. “Absolutely,” he said, pulling her against his hips so she could feel how hard she made him.

Her eyes smoldered hot and the pulse in the hollow of her neck fluttered wildly. “Great.”

The music’s tempo changed from sultry to an uptown disco reggae, but he didn’t care. He’d planned a more elegant proposal, front and center of her family and friends and everyone in between. But given his cock’s current state of granite and the more than pliant, willing woman in his arms, he wanted to get the nitty-gritty over with as soon as possible.

“Let’s get this fake engagement rolling,” he said, snapping open the box.

She peeked inside. As if for real, her hand went to her lips and her eyes grew soft with wonder. “It’s beautiful.”

Around them the crowd stopped dancing and seemed to draw a collective breath. Without thinking, he dropped to one knee and gazed up into Madeline’s heart shaped, beautiful face. For just a moment, everything crystallized and became clearer than the dew on early morning spring grass in the depths of her eyes.
