Chapter Three

The river crossing was going to be an issue.

Vadka stared down the hill toward the crossing. There was a large ferry, with several groups of people and a horse and cart waiting to board. They weren't yet, despite the ferry's apparent readiness, because of the trio of mage guards searching the cart.

If they were searching the cart, it was likely they'd search anyone who came up as well. In search of kinsen weed smugglers no doubt, as that was a major issue in the area. If they had been simply guards, it wouldn't be a problem. Mage guards, however, would immediately find and break the spelled compartment on Vadka's pack that hid his blood supply.

"What's wrong?" Renato asked, glancing worriedly between Vadka and the crossing. They were far enough away that they hadn't been seen yet, so Vadka grabbed Renato's arm and tugged him back down the path they'd been traveling.

"Mage guards. They're looking for something," Vadka said shortly. They could keep going, hope to find another crossing that didn't involve mage guards. That would add several days to the trip, however, if not a full week—or more.

They could wait... but if they were found waiting out the mage guard search, that could prove even more disastrous.

"Something we have?" Renato asked. He tugged at his cap, pulling it down over his forehead a bare millimeter. The little yellow flower Vadka had spelled for him still peeked out over his ear, lending him even more of an innocent air. "Me?"

"Not unless there's something you're not telling me," Vadka muttered. He let go of Renato's arm, heading toward the base of a large tree. "Likely smugglers. They'll search my pack and find..." Vadka hesitated, not wanting to say 'my blood' even though that was what it was.

"Oh," Renato said. He furrowed his brow, sitting when Vadka did. "You can't make it hidden?"

"It is hidden. That makes it more suspicious," Vadka said. He huffed, opening his pack. He started pulling things out: clothes, tools, various small bits of herbs and charm materials. He could explain the curse, but there was a good chance that none of the mage guards would believe him. Only those who had worked with him after he'd been cursed had been believing, as they'd had special training and been able to suss out the parameters of the curse. Normal witches and wizards couldn't do that.

Best case, they'd believe him and let him go with his blood supply intact. Worst case, they'd arrest him for trying to use human blood in his spells. Who would believe he had animal blood in his pack for consumption? No, more likely he was using human blood in illegal curses.

He'd have to dump it and hope he could find sources along the trail that would sell him more. That would screw up his budget, too. Vadka huffed. Going north or south would run him into the same problem: the extra time would eat into his supply and he'd run short.

A problem for the future.
