Chapter 17

The next morning I caught up with Carol and filled her in on what was happening. Then I dropped in at the boarding house to let Dulcie know that the room was a no-go unless by some miracle I landed a job that day or the next.

Dulcie understood and merely commented that she hadn’t exactly been rushed for the spare rooms, so I might still get lucky later in the week.

I arrived at the library later than usual and Eunice was extremely busy. She gave me a smile and a wave, indicating that I should come over to the desk.

“Good morning, Stacey. I wonder, dear, if you could do something for me. This stack of books needs to be placed back on the shelves. Would you help me out by doing that for me? You know now how they are kept.”

The stack was large. I was more than happy to help her in any way I could, so I nodded yes.

“Anything you’re not certain about, just bring it back to the desk for me. Thank you, dear.”

“Sure, Eunice. That’s cool.”

I grabbed six off the stack and took them over to a desk. I figured to place them in order of fiction and non-fiction to start with, and then by type. Genre was still a word I was not familiar with back then.

I took my time about doing it, not wishing to do the wrong thing and let her down. I was happy that she trusted me enough to do this, although puzzled as to why one of her assistants wasn’t delegated to the task.

The stack on her desk was almost completed before she was free of people at the desk. “Almost done, Stacey?”

“Yep. Almost. Just these couple more to do.”

“Fine, thank you, dear. That has saved me some time. When you have finished, come back over so we can have a chat. All right?”

“Sure.”

I had another hour or so of double-checking myself to make certain I had done the right thing, then walked over to her and waited for her to look up from what she was doing.

“All done?”

I nodded.

“Marvellous.”

She looked around. No one was hovering waiting for her attention and she grinned at me. “Okay, now, young woman, we need to discuss telephone technique.”

“Yeah, what is that? It sounds hard.”

“No, it is not difficult at all, dear. It’s all about good manners. When you answer a telephone, what do you say?”

“Um … I don’t remember if I have ever answered one, Eunice. I guess I’d probably say … um, 'Hello?'.”

She looked a little shocked. “Oh, my word. I am sorry, dear. I should have realized that you wouldn’t exactly have access to a telephone. It’s not difficult at all. Just remember that the person calling the number should be greeted politely and have confirmed for them that they have the right number.”

“So, I say, what? 'Hello ... um ... this is the library'.”

“Not exactly. Firstly you greet them with a 'Good morning' or 'Good afternoon', and then you can either say “State Library … or your name, as in ‘Stacey speaking’.
