CHAPTER TWENTY

For short seconds they stood still and then they both sprang back.

‘God! I’m so sorry!’ said Liv and she blushed profusely, looking mortified, and her fingers went to her lips.

Mac wobbled on her feet as an avalanche of purely sybaritic sensations raced through her body, moved from her mouth and touched every erotic stop-off point on its way south. She blinked, suddenly feeling light-headed, as though she was going to topple backwards.

Liv shot out her hand to clutch her arm. ‘Mac, are you all right?’

Mac gathered herself together. ‘Yes. Sure. Lost my centre of gravity for a minute.’

‘It’s no wonder with me falling all over you.’

Mac knew the other woman was trying to appear unfazed but an erratic pulse beat at the base of her throat, a mirror of Mac’s. She was convinced Liv would be able to see it if she chose to look.

‘I’m fine,’ Mac assured her. ‘Are you okay? Didn’t turn your ankle or anything?’

Liv looked down, moved her feet experimentally. ‘No. All working perfectly.’ She looked up and bit her lip. ‘Just dented pride. I'm really embarrassed. I should have been watching where I was going. I was looking at,’ she swallowed, ‘the flowers.’ She pointed at some scraggly, overblown blooms.

‘That’s okay. No harm done,’ Mac said brightly. ‘Let’s continue on.’

‘All right. And I promise to be more careful. And, Mac, I’m sorry about, well,’ she pointed at her lips and then at Mac’s.

Before Mac could stop herself her hand went to her lips where Liv’s touch still lingered. She drew on all her reserves and made herself laugh. ‘Don't be. I’m not. Probably the best kiss I’ve had in ages.’

‘Oh. Right.’ Liv raised her eyebrows. ‘You don’t get out much, do you?’ she said dryly and Mac dissolved into laughter.

‘Rats! My secret’s out.’

‘Mine, too.’ Liv sighed with exaggerated drama. ‘Aren’t we sad?’

Still chuckling, Mac turned back and resumed their walk down to the car park. Sad? Only sad that the kiss didn’t last longer, she reflected, and had to fight the urge to turn and touch those soft, so tempting lips again.

‘So. You’ve snuck in another date with Liv Murray.’

‘Jeez!’ Mac frowned at the phone. ‘You only pretend to be a lawyer, don't you, Dee? Admit it. You’re one of ASIO’s top operatives.’

‘No skulduggery this time.’ Dee laughed. ‘The information just fell into my lap. Cass told me when she came home from working on her science project with Izzy.’

‘It wasn’t a date.’ Mac huffed. ‘We both had time off work so we had lunch.’

‘Hmm. A picnic up to Kingstone Park, I hear. Very romantic. And it seems there’s a very nice pic of you looking all happy.’

‘What?’ So much for secret files, Mac muttered to herself. ‘How did you know about that?’

‘Liv showed Cass. Well, she was showing them the views she took from the lookout and up popped one of you. Cass said it was a great shot. Oh, and she said, to quote her, Ms Murray blushed.’ Dee gave a giggle. ‘Cute, hey? So tell all.
