Chapter Eight
Zoe walked into the coffee shop and looked around until she found Sam tucked away in one corner. She made her way over to her quickly, a smile on her face.
“Hey, sorry I’m late.”
Sam stood up and hugged Zoe. “Don’t worry, gave me time to catch up on my reading.”
Zoe glanced down at the table and saw the novel Sam had been reading. “Good then,” she said as she took her seat.
Sam stared at her friend, her eyes narrowing suspiciously. Then they widened in shock. “Jesus Christ, you just had sex!”
Zoe glanced up, also shocked as she looked around to see if anyone had heard Sam’s way too loud revelation. “What?” she said, still trying to feign shock.
“You have that look in your eyes, and I can see a new hickey on your neck. It wasn’t there when we spoke last night.”
Zoe tugged the collar of her shirt up, grimacing slightly. “I told Jonathan to stop doing that.” Then she smiled. “Yeah, okay. I had sex. Great, amazing sex by the way.”
Sam rolled her eyes. “You’ve having great, amazing sex for the last one month. Maybe it’s time you stopped sounding surprise when you say it.” She looked at her friend, trying hard not to overthink things. “I thought you said he was going to be busy this morning. Early morning business meetings.”
“Yeah, I know. I couldn’t wait for it to be over too, seeing as I was under the desk for the whole forty-five minutes it took him to finish the conference call. Then we did it on his desk.” There was a naughty gleam in Zoe’s eyes as she spoke and even Sam couldn’t deny missing it this time.
“Okay,” she lifted a hand. “Who are you and what have you done with my friend? The one who could never have thought she’d be happy having sex outside of a romantic relationship.”
Zoe just smiled, then gave her coffee order to the waiter when she passed by. As she did, Sam stared at her, noticing the difference that a month with Jonathan had wrought in her friends. Most of it was good, the ease with which she smiled, and how happy she was. But she also knew Zoe. The both of them had been friends since high school, and she had a very good idea what was happening. She noticed a shiny pendant around Zoe’s neck and stared at it, knowing there was no way Zoe could have been able to afford that. Which left only one conclusion.
“Nice necklace,” she said when the waiter left to bring Zoe’s order.
Zoe lifted her hand to her neck. “Yeah, Jonathan got it for me. He practically had to force it on me. I mean, the thing looks like it could buy my house. I told him I didn’t want to take it at first, but he begged so much I gave in.”
“Tell me again what you guys did yesterday?”
“Yesterday? I didn’t see him yesterday.”
“And the day before?” Sam asked again.
This time Zoe had a smile on her lips as she answered.
