ZINAIDA

The men begin to file into the room. They all look around with different levels of surprise and also knowing as they take in the room and who is standing in front of them. I don’t say anything to any of them. Not that I would. I honestly don’t know these men well. I’ve seen them at a few parties here and there over the years, but my father hasn’t been social much since becoming sick. They also didn’t come to the house at all.

My father didn’t want anyone to know how sick he was, so instead of having the men come in and out, he would have Serge, his Sovietnik and Motya be the go-betweens.

I’m not sure that it was the smartest thing to do now, when it comes to his reign. They are completely and totally unprepared for this moment. Though they no doubt realize something has happened with my home having been burned down.

“Please, I’d like to introduce myself,” Osip calls out over the low hum of the men talking among themselves.

I watch as Osip takes a cigarette box out of his pocket and then places one of them between his lips before shoving the pack back into his pocket. He lights the cigarette as he looks around the room.

As soon as he finishes his sentence, they’re quiet. You can hear a pin drop and all eyes are on us. Him more than me, I think, but I don’t chance looking around to check. I keep my head up, but my attention on the floor ahead of me.

Sucking in a breath, I hold it and wait for Osip to begin. I don’t know exactly what he’s going to say or how these men are going to react, but I have a feeling it’s going to be explosive no matter what happens.

Osip begins his speech. I can’t really hear him over the blood pumping throughout my body, it’s roaring in my ears. I can’t hear anything. All I can do is stare a few feet in front of me at this little speck of dirt on the floor.

Then Osip takes a step forward and for whatever reason, that causes me to jerk my body and I’m taken away from my moment of silence. My moment of quiet, my blood comes down to a dull boil and I chance looking around at the men in front of me.

“Zinaida is my wife. Vova is dead, Motya is dead, and so is Serge. They’re all gone, and I will be the new Pakhan.”

My breath hitches at his words. I wonder how long it will be until one of these men takes offense to what he’s said, to him in general. I know that it is coming. You cannot have a roomful of men, the same kind of men, and not have some kind of issue.

“So you think you can just come in here and take over our territories, our Bratva?” one of the men barks, taking a step forward.

He’s handsome. I recognize him by face only, but not by name.
