O’Clair got in the car and called DeAndre, told him what Leo Wall had said. “Can you search AFIS, find out if there’s anything on a Lawrence Meldrum, lives in Howell, or did. He’s Donna’s older brother and might be the father of Henry Cooper.”

“You serious?”

“Leo thinks so.”

“I’ll check it out. You coming back to the office?”

“It’s too late. I’ll see you in the morning.”

O’Clair put the car in gear and headed for 696. He took out his cell phone and tried Virginia on the way, grinning when he heard her voice.

“Pirate’s Cove Motel.”

“You know how much I miss you?”

“Who is this?” She laughed. “How much do you miss me?”

“More than I can put into words.”

“I didn’t know you were so romantic.”

O’Clair didn’t either.

“Tell me you’ve wrapped things up and you’re coming home.”

“Almost.”

“What does that mean?”

“I’m getting close.”

“Are you talking two more days, a week? I could use your help.”

“I doubt that, and I don’t know. How’re you?”

“A couple from Minnesota burned out the disposal in fourteen.”

“You got to fix something, so you must be happy.”

“We’re at eighty-five percent capacity.”

“Well, alert the media.”

“You don’t really care, do you?”

O’Clair let it pass. “How’re you and Holland getting along?”

“Fine. Just come home, will you?”

“I have to or I’m gonna go crazy thinking about you.”
