Chapter Twenty-Three
While Kenzi waited for the jailhouse gatekeeper to admit her, she texted Emma. She expected a response. She did not expect Emma to appear ten minutes later, decked out in her traditional black but looking much more alert than she wouldâve expected.
âIsnât this past your bedtime?â
Emma plopped down on the seedy, splintered bench beside Kenzi. âI hear you have a client in the joint.â
âAnd you came? Even before you saw my text?â
âYou think Iâm going to abandon you just when the case veers into territory I actually know something about?â
âAre you going to discourage me from handling this case?â
âThereâs nothing I could say that hasnât already occurred to you.â
âThere are many lawyers in Seattle with more criminal experience.â
âBut few with as much heart.â
Kenzi looked up. âWhat?â
âAnd few who care about their clients like you do. Which is probably more valuable than jaded lawyers jumping through familiar hoops.â
âIâ¦well, Iâ¦thanks.â
Emma glanced out the corner of her eye. âYou know, when we were growing up, sometimes I kind of resented you.â
âDo tell.â
âI thought you were all flash, no substance. I was a better student and I worked harder, but everyone congregated around you. But after we worked on that Breville caseâ¦I saw things a little differently. Youâre not just the flash. Youâre the heart. Iâm the brain, clearly. And itâs good to have both brains and heart, especially when youâre trying a case in front of a jury. Right now, youâre what Morgan needs.â
âI donât knowâ¦everything.â
âIâll fill in the blanks.â Emma gave her a gentle nudge. âIf we feel like weâre getting in over our heads, we can bring in another attorney. Morgan can afford it. May I ask you a question?â
Kenzi didnât wait. âShe didnât do it.â
âTell me you didnât ask.â
âShe volunteered.â
âAnd you believe her?â
âI do. Do you?â
Emma shrugged. âI donât know anything about people. Iâll let you be the judge.â
âI think the cops are desperate to charge someone. Theyâve been looking incompetent during this entire Seattle Strangler business.â
âBut they still wouldnât do arrest her if they didnât have some compelling evidence. They donât want a false charge blowing up in their faces. Remember, once the prosecution picks a defendant, they canât change their minds. Win or lose, they have to go down the line unequivocally insisting the person they charged was guilty.â
âI suppose thatâs true. Any way we can find out what they have?â
âEventually the prosecution will have to share their evidence. But theyâll wait until the last possible moment. Let me see if I can speed up the process. I have some friends.â
Kenzi blinked. Emma has friends?
âThey wonât give up the farm, but I might be able to pry a detail or two out of them.â
âThat would be great.â
Emma pushed to her feet. âIâll check in with you tomorrow morning. Reassure Morgan. Then get some sleep.â
âIâll try.â She grinned. âHailee will want to know everything.â
âNah. She already knows all there is to know.â
âFrom the internet?â
âFrom her aunt.â
âYouâve been texting?â
Emma paused by the door. âRemember what I said about you being the heart and me being the head? Hailee is the heart and the head.
