“Jake.”

“Hmm,” I groaned, swatting at Eddie’s hand as he shook me awake.

“It’s your turn.”

“Hmm?” I grunted. “My turn for what?”

“The baby. It’s time for her bottle.”

The instant he said that, I registered the sound of Sam crying on the baby monitor. I was so exhausted from being up all night celebrating Christmas with our friends and family that I’d completely slept through her cry for her four AM feeding.

I glanced over at the alarm clock and pulled the pillow over my head.

Make that two AM.

Our kid was an eating machine. A cute, pudgy eating machine.

The doctor told us not to worry, that she was healthy and happy, which was all either of us could ask for…

Except maybe some alone time.

Together.

Yes, we could definitely ask for that.

Since Sam’s arrival, Eddie and I have barely had time to bathe let alone do anything else. Every few hours there was some sort of activity – feedings, changing her diaper, or working on her development. Even when she was asleep there was something going on – laundry, bottle cleaning, picking up the house, and most importantly, sleep. Never in a million lives would I have dreamed an infant could create so much chaos and clutter, but she had. While I loved having our sweet little angel in our lives, and I wouldn’t change anything for the world, I couldn’t help but miss the touch of my husband.

We’d hoped to manage some alone time during the holidays, but there simply wasn’t any available. Eddie’s parents were staying with us, so between that and all of the festivities, we were once again parents before lovers. I’d studied enough psychology in grad school to understand this was common with newborns, but such knowledge didn’t make it any easier.

There were times I felt lonely. Quite often I missed our long talks over a glass of wine or a movie night on the sofa. But that was life.

“She’s gone quiet,” Eddie mumbled. “Maybe she went back to sleep.”

I kicked my legs out from under the covers and rubbed my sleep deprived eyes. “I better check on her, just to be safe.”

“M’kay.”

I clambered out of the bed and stumbled downstairs to the kitchen to warm Sam’s bottle, but came to an abrupt stop at the landing. Ralph, Eddie’s father, sat in the recliner, in front of the lit Christmas tree and a roaring fire, with Sam in his arms, feeding her.

The two of them together warmed and broke my heart. Ralph Eddington, Sr. had instantly taken to his granddaughter the moment she entered the world. Every time they were in town, Ralph made a beeline for Sam. If we would allow him to hold her twenty-four-seven, he would. He cherished her as if she were his own blood. My father still hadn’t seen her, nor did I ever expect him to. I’d given up on even reaching out to them. There wasn’t any point to set myself up for more heartbreak when I had the greatest joy in my life.

“Good morning,” I whispered to the older version of my husband.
